Default 17 inch wheels

Ihave a 2004 dodge ram quad cab 4x4 hemi.I have stock 20 inch wheels with stock 20 inch tires. I was going to put 17 inch tires and wheels on when the parts guy said the 17 inch wheels may not fit due tothe disc brakes on all 4 tires.
Current tire size P275/60R-20

What to change to
17x9 wheels rock crawler
33x12.50x17 Super Swamper Trxus STS/AT

He is not correct, you can run 17's or 20's but anything under a 17" wheel will not fit because of clearance with your calipers.

Find a different tire guy. I just swapped my stock 20s for 17s I was told by one tire guy they wouldnt fit but i did my own research and found that the brake and caliper set up is same own stock trucks. I put on 17x9 moto metal wheels with 295/70/17 nittos and they were a perfect fit with no clearance issues anywhere

Ressurecting this thread...

I have a 2002 Ram 4x4 4door with 20 inch rims. I tried on a set of 17 inch rims from a 2007 Ram 4x4 4door (chrome+plastic clad over alum?). One rim (driver rear) hung up on the brake clip sticking out of the caliper. Should this setup work? Did the calipers (or other axle setup) change between these model years? Or the rim geometry? Is it safe to grind down the clip so it doesn't drag? How much clearance should there be between caliper and rim? Thanks for your time.

One other thing - will 18" rims from 2nd gen Durango fit my 2002 Ram? Seems like the extra clearance would avoid the problem with the 17" Ram rims, and still be smaller than the 20 inch setup (so would fit in the wheel well).

I would say your truck has an issue then...all of the 1500 trucks from 02 and up came std with 17" wheels and the option of 20"..if you have one thats dragging then start looking into detail at the area cause thats where your issue is, not in the wheel size...you shouldnt have to grind down anything for a 17" wheel to fit....i'm running a 17x10 wheel with 35/12.50 tires and have no problems whatsoever
