Default Trailer Pull with 4.7 - SUCKS

I have a 07 4.7. Did a ton of research and the towing capacity is either 6300 or 7300 depending on gear. My window sticker states two different ratios. We picked up our new travel trailer yesterday. On the trip howm, the wind was blowing, the roads were wet, white knuckled all the way!

Here is the deal. The 4.7L power and economy SUCKS! 50 mph at 7 mpg for 30 miles. It may have been the wind and the wet roads, but I am very concerned about the ability of this vehicle to pull my 5800 lb trailer. What I would give to have my 97 360ci back. It rocked on towing power.

First thought was "I gotta get a bigger truck." However, should I consider some 4.56 gears? The truck is my daily driver in city driving. I have it on lease for 39 months and don't know what it will take to trade up.

The gears should improve the economy and power. Do you agree?

why didn't you just get the hemi? it's not to much more for that option.

i know mine tows like a champ (but nothing like a CTD)

as for gears, i couldn't tell you.. i've heard thoes will help.

along with a CAI and exhaust will help too.

gears will help, but then again will the dealer let you mod the veh????

i have a 4.7, but i rarely rarely tow so i have no issues, my gear rat is 3.92

you should have done a lil more research since you knew youd be towing stuff.

CUMMINS!!!!!!!!!!!!! [sm=itsok.gif][sm=imsorry.gif]

If you had any intentions of using your truck as a truck, the last thing you want is the 4.7 . It seems pretty clear to me what you should of gotten.

what gear ratio do you have? if its 3.55, theres your problem. 4.56 gears will help you out big time. theres plenty of guys towing big trailers with the 4.7 with no issues. 4.56 gears will help out your city driving as well too. actually, as long as you keep it under 70mph, you should see mpg gains. i wouldnt worry about higway driving with them either, your final overdrive ratio will keep the rpms around 2400rpm at 70 mph depending on tire size.

i hear you on the towing power... as soon as i put an empty trailer on mine it felt like there was an anchor on me. luckily i only used it for towing once, and dont plan on doing much more until i move...

should have def. gone for the hemi if you knew you were gonna be towing a lot... i dont know how the dealer will be with letting you trade up. a guyat work got an 06 dakota on lease, after having an 05 Sierra Duramaxx, and was just in such distress about having a smaller truck that he imediately looked into getting a full size, only to find out that he can do it, but he would have gotten hosed. maybe you can have better luck!

i have an '07 QC 4x4 with the 4.7 and 3.92s and tow a 3500lb enclosed trailer. on the highway at about 65mph i get 9.5 mpg. power is reasonable but i'm 2000lbs lighter than you. looking back i wish i would've got the hemi but i'm stuck with what i have now so i'll deal with it.

When I leased the truck, I was pulling a pop-up with not thoughts of upgrading trailers. I did the research on the trucks capacity before I purchased the new trailer. The trailer is under 6000 lbs., Dodge states 6300 or 7300 depending on gear. Either way, it should be fine.

I did not think about having to check with dealer on mods. I will have to research that issue. If there is no issue, I think 4.56 gears is going to be my low cost solution.

They state the max, to tow COMFORTABLY, you need to be at about 85% of max cap. I tow all the time with my hemi, the mileage sucks but it has the power.

4.56's will help, how long have you had the truck? pulling in gears will void the warrenty on the rearend.

If you tow you shoulda got a more powerful engine. I think my 4.7 has plenty of power for the size of the truck. I agree with CTD
