Looking at the Hanes Manual you can pull the Glove Box out and the intake for the recirc housing is behind there. Get some disinfectant with a long spray tube and point it toward the evap core (twd the left) spay IAW manufacturer recommendations. Run the heat for 10 mins in recirc to dry out system prior to.

Sounds like fungus/mold on the evaporator, like Cactus and trfdangsaid.

 

use the lysol trick it will work !!

mildew, mold. my 07 has it too. their is a tsb on it, ask your dealer or i will look for it. tsb fix was pretty much what a few guys here said to do. get to the evaporator core and spray some lysol on them. then run the heater. hope this helps.

If it's a fishy smell, make sure no one played a joke on you and put sardines or fish oil in your air box..... (Not that I ever did it) But Have seen it done......

 

I used to work at a dealership. Long story short, a gentleman brought his truck in for the exact same problem. It basically smelled like shi@te. We eventually took apart the dash and found a rats nest. Mama and three babies died in the dash.
