Default Weird smell?

Hey guys... So I have had this problem for a while now...

When I turn on the AC there is a DISTINCT "fishy" smell coming from the vents... Its absolutely horrid. Now I know that in these trucks there is no cabin filter like in the older model trucks. I want to take it to the dealership but dont feel like paying the money just to have it looked at, and then more $ to get it worked on. I figured I would ask here first to see if any of you have any ideas as to what it could be or what I could try for a cheap first start.

Also, I notice it alot more if I have had the AC off for a while and then turn it back on. The smell doesnt "stay" persay, but when it is first turned on it is almost unbearable.

Thanks!

That is way to funny. LOL
Well if you ask me, I think something might have crawled up in there somewhere and then died so I hate to say this but you might want to take the truck to a shop. What year is your truck anyways.

A bad heater core gives off a funny smell but it usually is kind of a sweet smell like anti freeze.

It sounds like a case of mold in the system somewhere. I do not know how to go about cleaning it though. Houses down here have something similar with their forced hot air/AC units after sitting all winter. Maybe someone can explain how to clean it. Good luck. Red

I don't really think it's mold if it's an AZ truck, but my Saturn had the same problem going after I'd had it in AZ for two years. I would be inclined to believe that something may have died in it as well.

If your in AZ i doubt its mold, but your symptoms are similar. I would also guess a bad heater core, or a dead creature

You know.. honestly.. I heard this on Click and Clack (Car Radio Show on NPR). They had some guy on that had the same issue. They told him to buy some lysol. Then spray itfrom the front outside vent of the vehicle into the vent, open the windows of the car and let it circulate. They swear by it.....

It cant hurt.. and it will only cost you a couple of bucks at worst...

I don't know where you are located but I've heard it is a good idea to run the ac a couple times during the winter.
