404 code - egr -what if i drive with this?
2nd time i have had this code and after 2 days of autozone telling me what it is, the engine light went off.
First time i ignored, no performance issues, happened about 6 months ago. This last one happened within the last week.
I have 05 QC, SI / DO Flowmaster 40, Airraid CAI -these have been on for about a year.
Not sure what this EGR valve actually does, can i replace myself, why the code goes off after a few days. Seemed to go off after a 40 mile highway drive /shrug
whats your thoughts....
thx again,
Boyd

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation)recirculates exhaust gases back into the engine through the intake manifold...it's an emissions thing. If that's the problem then it's really easy to replace. If you have a hemi then the egr is right in front of the passenger side head...it looks like a small cylinder about 2" in diameter and 3-4" tall. Once you see it removal and install is self explanatory. I'm not sure where it's at on the 4.7 or 6'er...
The code goes off on it's ownbecause the EGR errordoesn't repeat itself for a certain amount of ignition cycles and/or complete drive cycles. The code is still stored in the PCM's DTC history so if you wanted you could use a scanner and see that the code was thrown.
