Default New Guy, new truck, new to Dodge...again

I'm new to this website, and back to Chrysler products again. My first car was a 1961 Plymouth Valiant I bought from my grandfather for $1. It was great for a 14 year old to disassemble, since it had no floor, a totally dead slant six, and he'd painted it with house paint and a brush! My next car was a 1961 Chrysler Newport Wagon that I wish I still had, and various others from that era. And then there's the Plymouth Superbird I could have bought for $5000, that I still kick myself about.

Anyway, we now own a new 2008 Dodge Ram QC 4.7 SLT, and I have a few questions.

1. A recent poll I saw here said the 4.7 has 245hp. The new Dodge brochure says 315, which is close enough to the hemi's 345 for me. Did they change the 4.7 recently?

My new owners manual says the 4.7 has 16 plugs, 8 of which you change every 30k, and 8 at 102k. Why 16 different plugs?

Why is this thing so tall? My wife loves it, but it's the tallest 4x2 truck I've ever owned. It won't even fit in the garage!

Does anyone know about any problems with the lifetime warranty, or things I need to look out for? My GMC I recently sold had 283,000 miles on it, and I only sold it because I didn't feel like putting a $2000 transmission in a $2500 truck that only had two doors. Would Dodge try to get out of warranteeing a transmission that old with that many miles on it by saying it was normal wear and tear?

Youve got the HO. The plugs dont know why, maybe the other 8 are for show.

Dodge should cover it no matter how many miles unless they had a secret book that puts parts like a tranny etc at a max usable life and after that is considered a wearable device like break pads and not cover it. Also Chrysler may not even be around 300,000 miles from now.

Dodges sit higher, my 4x4 sits higher than a ferds 2500 4x4.

As for the house paint, that's a custom paint job.

you'll be lucky if there is still a Dodge around to honor that warranty to even worry about that problem...

the ratings on the newer 4.7, 310 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque, is what is listed on the Dodge website, so yes they revised it.

they probly did the plug setup to harvest more power from the motor in a similar fasion to the HEMI which also has 16 plugs, it helps burn all the fuel that still might remain in the cylinders on the usual non-compresion strokes. As for the wierd schedule as to when to change them, all I know is that on my HEMI they want you to change them all at 30,000 I believe... but I didnt and now I have 55,000 and it still drives exaclty the same as before 30,000 so whatever on that one.

I'm in about the same boat - just got a 2008 4.7 two months ago. (LOVE it, by the way!)

Yes, they just revamped the 4.7 L for this model year, getting more HP out of it now. I guess the 16 plugs are new, along with that. As for those extra 8 plugs, I asked the service manager the same question - why a differentmaintenance schedule? His answer - they have to tear half the engine apart just to get to them, so they put the longer-lasting, 'better' plugs on the bottom of they cylinders.

That's just great. The plugs are really that hard to get to?

I do all my own work, as much as possible. My last two trucks, only saw the dealership three times between them in 423,000 total combined miles, and one of those was for bodywork, and the other was for trim to be added at purchase! The only other time was for stalling under warranty and I just didn't feel like messing with it.

Maybe if the pugs are that hard I may let them take a crack at them. That won't come up for another three years or so anyway.

the 4.7 HO has been out for a few years, but this new 4.7 hasnt...this 4.7 is a completley new design, the head design is very similar to a hemi, the have the variable valve timing like the viper engine, the 16 spark plugs, and the big increase in power..not sure if they are putting this 4.7 in the daks yet but id bet it would run with a stock hemi if they did
