Key Cut Cost
does anyone know how much it cost to get a blank 06+ remote/key cut, im wondering because im thinking about tryin to get a newer remote to work on my older truck. i own a 2003 dodge ram 1500 slt, it didnt come with a remote but i have a friend at a dodge dealership that is going to try and program a remote for me. anyway i was wondering if anyone with the 02-05 year rams has tried or successfully made the 06+ remotes work
in other words, im wondering if its possible to use the newer remote with the key built-in on an older truck.
anyone with info please leave it
its really not a big deal it would just be neat to have the newer remote

What's the difference between what would've been on your '03 and what the '06 offers? Since the system in the '06s is more computer-interfaced, it would seem more practical to get an aftermarket system.
hold on i explained this horribly
rams up to 2005 i believe use the keyless entry remote that is shaped like an eight:

the newer rams, 2006 and on use the newer remote with the key built into the remote:

i was wondering if i could somehow use the newerone and if so how much it would be to have an 06+ remote cut

My truck has the remote in the first illustration. My 300C has the other one. The second one is a Sentry Key always, I think. Maybe as long as the cross-section of the key is the same, it may be able to start the truck, open the doors, etc., but I'd be wary of the remote functions to match. If anyone knows for sure one way or the other, jump in here. Otherwise it's an expensive experiment.
I wish I could comment on the remotes working, but I have no idea. As for cutting them, Ace Hardware will cut them for free if you bring in your own key. I bought an aftermarket alarm and remote start, so I wanted to get a keywith out a remote in it. I bought two plain keys with chips in them on ebay for about $30-$40. Ace cut them and I programmed them.
The only way they will be compatible is if the FCC ID number on the back of the remotes are identical. Even for a 2006 owner that has two of the same "shaped" remotes, the FCC ID number still needs to match in order for the remote to work.

I have one of the newer key and remote combos, and I am surprised with the total lack of range. Even the owners manual states you must be 23 feet or closer to lock/unlock the doors with the remote. I basically have to stand next to the truck to get it to work.
The remote on my Ford can be used to find it in a parking lot!
