Default Transmission fluid

What is the proper procedure for checking transmission fluid on a 2002 1500 5.9l. I have heard leave it in park running and leave it in neutral running, and etc... Also, can you check it after you get back from saying going to town. No traffic the last 6-7 miles open four lane hwy. What are some signs that the transmission willl show if it isover full. (besides the dipstick reading) I replaced my transmission cooler (leaking) yesterday and I think I may have gotten it over full.

Presuming you don't have the manual, I believe it's spend a few seconds in each gear, winding up in Park. Best bet is with the tranny hot (not warm -- hot). You proably have a "hot" and "cold" mark on the dipstick. The level should be on or below "hot". All this applies to my '03. Yours is very likely the same procedure.
