which gears do i have
I bought my 03 ram used, and I do some towing with it. My question is how do I know what gears I have. At about 70 the rpm are at 2,000, and what would be the recommended size to put in there. I have heard of people puting 4.56.
Open your glove box. There is a sticker in there and axle ratio is typed on there.
3:92 is the norm if it came from the factory with 20's.
Changing gears is your coice, but I don't think you'll have any trouble towing anything with the factory gears.
I tow a 8,000 pound boat with the 3:92's.

its the 4.7
I just went outside and checked. They are 3.92. I live in South MS and there are not many hills around here but I didnt like the rpms when I was towing with O/D off on the interstate. With O/D on it was shifting too much. I guess there isnt enough torque that low in the rpm range to keep it at 65-70

A lot of the 4.7 guys change to 4:10 and seem to be very pleased with the results.
I also think a programmer with tow mode will help. Especially with the shifting.
