Default building a cold air intake

planning to build a cold air intake but i have a few questions.

1. can i just put a universal pcv filter on or is there a reason they decided to run it into the intake? seems a bit foolish to me to run it like that and if i can re-route it all the better.

2. what is the job of the air intake sensor? i would be really glad to ditch that little bugger because i don't see any really easy way to reconnect it to the new CAI....but if i have to have it i'll come up with something

thanks in advance for the help!

It's either your MAF sensor, or IAT sensor. MAF measures mass air flow, and IAT measures Intake Air temperature. These sensors are both used to help determine how much fuel is injected according to how much and at what temperature the air is when going into the cylinders.

so if it is in fact a IAT would it be safe to assume (and bear with me here because i am no mechanic) that if i mounted it in a place it is always cool, making the computer think it is consuming nice cool air, that i would be tricking the computer to send more fuel to the engine?

EDIT- any thoughts/opinions on just using a PCV filter rather than running it into the intake?

you can just put one of those mini filters on the PCV or just let it open. The sensor is the IAT, 3rd gen rams dont have a MAF(except maybe the 360?). you dont need to putthe IATin the CAI, but it does need to be plugged in or you will throw a code and the CEL will come on; I have/ had mine taped to the firewall.
