is this just the LSDs that have the clips? from what I understand the clips are on the LS clutch, so I guess an open diff should not have them. am I understanding that right?

Youknow, for the last 3 years or so that I've read about these clip issues, I haven't seen a technical explanation, of if the LSD will work with or without them???
I had issues about 8K ago, and removed all of the clips as two had fallen out and not damaged the gears and one was lightly scoring the right carrier bearing as you look at the diff fromt the rear.
The other clip was still in it's pocket but working it's way out.
I figured that I was indeed, better off without them at present.
I live in the UK and my trucks not covered under warranty and there is no one I can go to, to install either an LSD or the 4:56 gears front and back I want for my 4X4.
My truck still runs OK and the LSD still appears to work OK.
Two black lines on a burnout and not stuck inmud etc.
Can anyone, who is a "master tech" working for Dodge, find out for us poor folk, who can't either afford to replace Dodges crapengineering,or do it through a lack of qualified people, find out if removing the clips will cause a problem please?
This question is often asked but as I said, never answered??????

Well, I have searched all over the internet, but have yet to find a illustration, diagram, or exploded view of the Traction-Loc rear from a Dodge. I do not have a manual on the truck, but I am guessing they should have one in it. I have never taken out one of these carrier or seen one apart so I can not say for sure if it will work without the clips. From what I understand is that the Trac-Loc and open diff use the same carrier, but he Trac-loc just has the clutches and clips. I am going to remove the remainder of the clips and see how it works. As of right now no shops in my area want to rebuild the clutch pack and the only one that does wants a little less than just replacing the whole thing. So if I take the clips out and it break o well, worth a shot. If it works w/o problems then I just saved my dad $1000 or so. I will post my finding out when I get to doing this (hopefully this weekend). Still if anyone has done this or has a real world answer please enlighten the rest of us theorists.

if you want to see how the limited slip works here is a pic from alldata showing the clutch packs and the side gears and there is a link explaining/showing how it works.

I read the article atlaticblueramand the clutch type shown in that article, shows springs pushing on the clutches in the clutch pack.
These springs pre-load the clutches.
I can't see how the retaining clips that Dodge use, act in the same way??
I can't figure out if this design therefore, needs the clips for anything other than to aid assembly?
Thanks for the article though.
Lots of good stuff there.
You will need a pair of 30 degree or 45 degree needle nose pliers, to get the retainers out of their pockets Triph75. It's tricky and it helps, if the clips are already making their way out of the pockets. The ends tend to be already snapped off the clips when they do this.
I've head mine removed for at least 8K miles with no ill effects so far.
At least my carrier isn't been eaten to the bone by the cutting effect of these clips.
There are 4 clips in total 2 per side.
Hope this helps?

Cheers.
Al.
