Just Traded My 07 Tundra for a Ram
I had an 07 Tundra 4x4 5.7. Nice truck, but when I loaded a lawntractor in the back and the tailgate snapped, I decided to dump it and dump it fast. I purchased a 2004 Ram 2500 Reg Cab. Long Bed SLT 4x4 with a Hemi 35k Miles for $13,800 certified. Was this a good deal and will this truck last me? Problems so far are just noise mainly. When I accelerate I hear a metal on metal noise and thought it was the rear. The dealer told me it was a resination noise from the exhaust and it was a common thing. There is a slight vibration when taken off from a stop, and I have a constant clicking coming from the engine every few secs. Besides that seems pretty heavy duty, and not to bouncy like I though it would be. I'd appreciate if anybody could tell me about that exhaust noise, I couldn't really find any posts on it. Its pretty loud and annoying. Anybody curious on the Tundra I had, well it rode like a cadilac and was very fast, had nice interior, but was expensive. IMO I really couldn't give a shet about those things though, I need a truck for work and if a farking tailgate snaps when loading, the truck can't be built that good. Also at 2k miles I had a vibration when accelerating on that truck too, the dealership said their was a recall for the torque converter. I pray this Ram will last because I had to eat a ton of money up when trading this Tundra on the Ram, luckily it seems as if I got a decent deal on the ram. Also on this 2500 Ram, it is wet on the outside of the pumpkin. The dealer said it is grease from the factory and not diff. fluid, he said these rears are real good. Originally with that loud metal to metal noise, which only happens when driven not at idle, and the wet rear I though the rear was shot. Any help here?
welcome to the forum and glad to hear a switch from toyota to dodge! the tundra sounded real nice but too bad the tail gate went to ****. im sure the ram will be much better off as a work truck than the tundra. the tundra wasnt made to do such hard work. theyre probably still working on those things. (waiting on the toyota bashers now...) anywho, that tick you hear may be the infamous HEMI tick. but you did get a good price for such a nice truck with low miles for 4 years, a HEMI, and 4x4!!
toyota basher #2. Welcome to the forum. And definitely glad you chose to swith to an american "well built" truck. Abou the problems with your 2500... just give it a bit someone will get back to you ASAP on this forum. These people kick major azz. But your absolutely right about trading the tundra for a 2500 (when using it for heavy duty work). P.s. you got a great deal.
geeze, how much did you end up having to eat on that trade? Dont feel too bad, I have an 08 tundra and although the tailgate is supposed to be improved over the 07's, they still dont feel nearly as strong as my 1st gen tundra or any other full size truck. But it is under warrenty, and id rather go in to change out my tail gate on my tundra than my differential on a ram.

It's the LSD's that are the problem...other then that the rears are strong.

Yea, I have seen on the toyota forums where the tailgate breaking is a common problem. The tundra can supossedly dead pull a sea crate up over the side of a mountain, stop a big *** trailer on a steep incline, but the tailgate breaks when a 500lb lawnmower is being loaded. LOL..It sounds like you are describing the hemi tick, as for the pumpkin being wet I dont know why the factory would put grease on it; I would take it to a local place that does rear ends and see what they say
Welcome to Dodge Forum. For all the symptoms you have described they are common known problems and a simple visit to the deaer can be a simple fix. With exception of probably the hemi tick. The metal to metal grinding could possibly be the broken clips in your differential which is very common with the LSDs and as far as grease on the pumpkin it is common to see that.I had the same on my 02 and at 99k miles performed like a champ even without ever changing the gear oil. These are some pretty solid trucks and I am sure they wont disappoint.
