Opinions Please...Synthetic vs. standard oil?
I continue to use dead lizards and change it every 3K. It still gets dirty at the same rate. Synthetics provide greater heat resistance and less friction, but they still have to be changed. I just can't see putting oil in at five or six or ten dollars a quart and then draining it out so soon. My Ram gets 5w-30 ('03, so no MDS) and the C gets 5w-20 Pennzoil (Hi-Mileage for the Ram).
Recent tests I've read say that Pennzoil Platinum (Pennzoil's full synthetic) is better than Mobil1 in many ways, and is cheaper at WalMart. It is available in 5W-20, 5W-30, and 10W-30.
I've always used castrol GTX syntec 10W30 in my dak, and it has 225,000kms and still runs good. I'm probly gonna use that in the daytona on my next oil change.
I use RP in my Miata. the bearng test M1 failed at 80,ooolbs of pressurewhile the RP never did fail with in excess of 200,000 lbs of pressure. This test is testing among other things the film strength. Film strengts is the oils ability to keep moving parts separated. When I installed Rp in my Miata the engine was not noisy but with RP it sounded like the engine had been wrapp ed with sound deadner. They claim 12k interval with filter change at normal intervals.
