Will the power wire with a programmer make my engine detonate?
So I am considering the purchase of the AirRam Power Wire, but I also have plans for getting the Bully Dog Power Pup programmer. Since both of these devices will advance my timing, I need to know if there will be any kind of detonation. Is anyone else running this setup on their rig? for a 5.7 Hemi btw. thanks
Advancing the timing raises the chances of this, which is why you want to run higher octane and in seriously modded trucks run a cooler plug.
Thanks for the advice, but both of these products advance timing in different ways, which is why i was concerned that with even 93 octane I would detonate. The Power Wire makes the intake temp sensor signal read 20 degrees cooler, tricking the ECM to advance the timing, but with an additional timing advance from the programmer, i am concerned that the high test fuel wont do the trick. maybe suggest some of the "cooler plugs" you were talking about. Also, my Ram is an '03 with the 2 plugs per cylinder. Which plugs would i replace if i was going to do this since one fires on the power stroke and the other on the exhaust stroke. I obviously would want the ones that fire on the power stroke to be the cooler ones, but which ones are those? i hope im making sense here.
I am currently running a powerwire with the superchips programmer and have suffered from no detonation. Been running this set up for a few months now with no problems at all.
Timing advance is timing advance. All the Hemis are two plugs per cylinder. I've never seen mention of using two different temperature ranges. The only time I've heard of folks using colder plugs is when they're using some sort of boost (turbo- or super-charging). I'd say stick with NGK 5306s or whatever Bosch has for an equivalent. We ain't talking hundreds of horsepower here. The PW might add ten, the Bully Dog thirty (but I doubt it).

I run a Superchips set for performance and a 180* t-stat which basically is what the power wire is emulating, and run 93 with absolutely no issues.
