I've always used fishing line then a pinstripe remover attached to a cordless drill. With a little light pressure it takes off all the remains in seconds and unless you really lean on it, it's perfectly safe on the clear coat...
When i debadged my old dakota I used a blow dryer to heat everything up, rubed them off with a paper towel, and removed residue with WD 40... couldn't tell the decals were ever on there
becareful if you use something like a flathead screwdriver, cause it will scratch your paint very easily. i wouldnt use one. sharp objects near paint not that great of an idea.fishing line works great.
