Default How I Gained 2mpg

I drive 22 miles round trip to work and back. Instead of doing my usual 70-75 I slowed down to 55 and took it real easy on the starts and stops. I thought I might gain a little bit but I actually gained 2mpg in a combination of highway and city driving. With the price of gas every little bit helps.

I drive a 06 2500 reg cab 4x4 hemi, 6sp 373 ltd slp, not a truck that's going to rival a honda with MPG.

I have dual ex , no y pipe ( crapp dynomax mufler ) and a cab high topper, I average 20 to 22 mpg highway if I keep the RPMs below 2000 from 2nd all the way to 6th gear.

city gets me 15 to 17 mpg

I also coast a lot, down hills or to a stop at a red light, my route of travel is consistant, and I know when trafic lights are going to turn red.

I run my tires at 50 psi, use mid grade flue, mobil 1 synt and have really noticed a improvenemt using Premuim flue and not driving in the heat of the day.

The service staion I buy my gas from is a independant dealer, the shells and petro canadas carry premium at 10 to 12 cents over reg flue, at this place, reg and premuim cost the same.

What kills my mpg is playing drag racer and traveling at verry extream high way speeds.

not all hemis leave the factery in a perfect sate of performnce and economy and from my experiance, the higher octane flue nets higher h/p and improved mpg, the extra cost's using premium and mpg gain is a trade off each hemi driver has to figure out.

I have a 35 gallon tank, or a 135 lt so every thing I can do to extend my mileage and lower operating cost's using simple tech. I'm doing..

my next mod's are going to be a tunner, and Volany CAI.

Yep, my average speed has dropped with the gas prices rising. I think 60-65 is the optimum speed for gas mileage in my truck...

However, I saw a decent gain of about 1.5 mpg just by switching to Amsoil oil, and Amsoil differential fluid. That was an unexpected gain so was definantly happy about that. Also the Edge seems to be doing pretty good squeezing as much as possible out of the tank, no real numbers on it yet, but my overhead is making me happy right now...

Add this little trick. I try to average 46 mpg while going down hills. I use down hills to generate speed to coast up the short hills. On longer hills I gradually decelerate using a little engine power but slowly slowing down the whole way up. I once averaged over 20mpg for a full tank of gas!! Takes a little practice.

set the cruise on long runs and keep it under 2k (rpms) from a stop light and you'll do about as good as you can. kill the cruise on downhills so the truck doesn't downshift in order to slow you down...otherwise, stop complaining about gas...it sucks, we know, you drive a truck, so do the rest of us....

Well, now that the gloves have come off...

The big three never really intended for Pick-ups and SUV to become daily drivers. They were supposed to be second or third vehicles used for special purposes. Gas in the US is still cheap compared to all of Europe. Now if you use your truck for work and can't avoid it then I do feel for you but if you are using a 2.5 ton vehicle to commute...

not sure if the gloves off comment was at me, but if it was, i wasn't trying to be rude, just tired of every other post about gas saving when driving a pickup truck....do the guys over on the prius forum bitch daily about the cargo capacity or tow rating of their car? (they probably do to be honest...)

To keep w/ the thread, I'm with tboughton, 55 is the way to go.....get in the slow lane and enjoy the view, and open it up when necessary.....my problem is the QTP e-cutout....makes me get a little heavy footed on the weekends!
