Default Towing question? Anyone pull a 4 place enclosed sled trailer

I was thinking of buying a 4 place enclosed snowmobile trailer. I was wondering if anyone tows anything of about equal weight with a ram 1500 4.7 or if anyone thinks it can be done pretty regularly?

I think if I remember correctly, I looked it up for someone else recently and the max towing weight for a Quad Cab 1500 with 4.7L is around 6500 lbs. Assuming the sleds weigh around 800 a piece, that's 3200. That gives you over 3000 lbs for the trailer, and I doubt it weighs that much. I think you should be fine. I towed 2 800lb wheelers on a trailer and one in the bed and I barely felt it.

Sleds weigh about 500 lbs a piece. Socall it2500 poundsto be safe. Thatwould be on the heavy side too. Then I figure 3000lbs on the heavy side for the trailer. So roughly 5500lbs I would say.I asked on another sled forum and people asked me if I was nuts.

What year is the truck? Check out this link for exact numbers. I don't see why people would think your truck can't handle towing 5500lbs. Just make sure the tongue weight is within limits. Do you have a towing package on your truck?

I dont think I have the tow package. I bought a 2 inch reciever setup that bolted into the tubular bumper I guess it would be. I mean the wires were all there but there was no hitch.

No, you don't have the tow package. I think all the trucks come with the 4 pin harness, but the ones with the package come with the class IV hitch and 7 pin harness. If your receiver only bolts to the bumper then you can't tow much. You should get a frame mount receiver, then you should be able to tow the lesser of the receiver rating or the tow rating of the vehicle.

Its an 04 dodge ram. 2 guys said I couldnt. The first guy said I should of got a chevy if I wanted to tow that much and the other said I needed the 5.7. But a couple other guys said it can be done. Heres what the other 2 guys said. I just wanted to see what people here would think.

"get an electric fan kit for the truck, that made a big difference on mine in terms of economy and pulling power and get a power tuner, those two things will set you back about $700 but the power and econ you get back will pay for that stuff in less than a year. "

"anyone that says you are nuts obviously has no experience with towing. the new 4.7 makes almost the exact same HP and torque as the old 360 did and it makes about the same power as the 03 ford 5.4 and 03 chevy 5.3. the chevy and ford got more power after that but all in all the 4.7 is a very capable motor"

Well if it is properly installed and that's the rating it gives, then I guess that's your max as long as your truck can tow that. I would like to hear other people's input though too.
