is this stuff really worth the extra money to put into the truck? and how often do you need to change it?

I've always used Mobile 1 and either a Mobil 1 or Napa Gold (Wix) filter. When I went to purchase oil for my daily driver (Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4) I decided to try Royal Purple because the auto parts store had it on sale.
Changed out the oil and lube in both differentials and have been getting a steady 2 mpg increase, I've just put it in the truck. Don't have any data yet, as I've been on vacation and had not put more than a hundred miles on the truck since the oil change.
I always religiously changed my oil and filter at 3k miles, but I'm going to wait till 6k in the Jeep and see how dirty it is. If I can get away with 6k changes, it will easily justify the extra cost, even if the truck doesn't experience the same mpg gains as the Jeep...

I'm going to switch over to Amsoil 5W-20 and a WIX filter. I can get 2 cases and 3 WIX filters to my door for $159. A lot of pros and cons as far as MPG gains, but it's definately better for the engine and it runs cooler. I tow ATV's and snowmobiles, so a cooler running engine is a plus. I'll post any MPG gains in the next week or two.

i use royal purple for the engine and the differential. with them together i have seen a 2mpg increase as well, and hand calculated its really about 1.7, but its close enough to 2. i was planning on putting it in the transmition too, but never got around too it. i personally think its worth the extra money

it does make a big difference. i've run it in all my cars and it gives better mileage. i've done oil analysis's on every vehicle and there are less contaminants in the vehicles that i run RP in. also longer oil change intervals are capable. i run 15,000 mile changes in my BMW and Mercedes. i'll run 7,500 mile changes with the dodge now that it's got RP in it. i average 15mpg in the city with RP in the engine and Mobil 1 in the diffs.

Royal Purple, Mobil-1, Amsoil and Pennzoil Platinum (shocker right, PP has great add packs) are all good synthetics...but synthetic oil gets just as dirty as dino and needs to be changed at regular service intervals to prevent sludge. If you can't afford to do that then switch back to dino...you'll be doing your engine a favor.

Read this thread from LS1.com....you'll learn a lot about oil if you're interested http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1299
