I had the same difficulty. I finally paid a shop to loosen the fan clutch nut the day after Thanksgiving. Since then I bought a "spanner" which allows me to hold the water pump pulley while I wrench the nut. Note: You DO NOT need to retain the nut. (Wish I'd known that T'giving Day!)

I use a MONKEY WRENCH/SCREWDRIVER & SLUDGE HAMMER to get mine off... Pops off every time.

- Make note of which direction is LOSE... The engine turns the fan to tighten so you want to smack the wrench in the opposite direction of rotation.

- Place MONKEY WRENCH on to the lug

- Stick the screw driver into one of the pulley holes and wedge it to keep the pulley from turning

- Wack the wrench with the Sludge hammer 2-3 times and it will spin right off.

nick is right...it needs a godd whack/effort to break it...I shove a phillips in one of the holes in the pulley and with a very big crescent wrench I just kept making jerky downward thrusts (counter/clockwise) until mine spun loose (and others wen doin cam installs)

I'll bet thats messy using a sludge hammer. I prefer a sledge hammer myself[sm=icon_rofl.gif] Sorry, couldn't help myself

just did it this weekend. messed with it for 2 hrs. wedge a 2x4 between the pulley"s, and used a hammer with a quick blow to the crecent. thought i was going to break something but it finally came off. called the local parts store and they had the tool to rent that holds the water pump pulley (13$). so after i called them i thought i am going to try to do it one more time. got a litttle more agressive with it and got it off. sometimes you just have to walk away from it for a minute.

I havn't taken the fan off on my truck, but I have done it on countless other vehicles(mostly trucks) and the best thing is to use an air hammer and pneumatic fan clutch adapter for it. For most it isn't feasible to go out and buy these tools for a single job, but you might check to see if like mentioned before somewhere that rents tools might have. As far as keeping the pulley from turning, if theres room you can try to put more tension on the belt with the tensioner. Or sometimes, depending on the pulley design if you can wedge a prybar between the pulley and the block that will tend to work too.
