Well i just crawled under neath my truck because i hear a ticking noise only when i push the gas, so i checked the drive shaft and you can't shake it up and down but you can turn it a little bit, the drive shaft will move maybe a 1/2 inch back and forth. so my question is: is there suppose to be a little bit of play like that or is something going like a u-joint, or maybe something in the rear end?

 

sounds like the rearend click. someone with better knowlege of the subject will go into more detail. mine does it sometimes too.

 

yeah i want to try and find out what it is its getting annoying and it makes my truck sound like its falling apart. my truck also has a little shake while driving but im hoping thats just from the tires.

 

that doesn't sound good. first off check to see if you thew a wheel weight (that just might be your shaking) you can check your ujoints by grabbing the yokes and trying to push/pull/shift them around in a motion perpendicular to the driveline. if they have play, then the spider needs to be replaced. you can check your pinion in a similar manner and best to have the rear wheels unloaded when you do (up on a jack and not in park)

 

A slight amount of play is normal, not sure what the tick is.
Also, a little shake can be caused by a host of minor issues ranging from an unbalanced tire, a bad tire, U-joints, ball joints, a drive shaft that is slightly out of balance, as well as a host of other things. Sad part is, it's usually 100x harder to isolate the problem then it is to correct it...

 

i just got some new gears and posi, maybe they put it in wrong? could that be the problem?

 

a click/tick could also be U-joints going bad..it's hard to ell by wiggling it sometimes but I had a click noise and when I changed my U-joints..no more noise... hopefully this could be it because this is a cheap fix

 

I've not really heard of a "tick" from improperly set gears. It's usually a whine, heard especially when accelerating/decelerating. But if you didn't have a tick before the gear install and do now after, I'd take it where you had it done and have them checked. Setting gears in a Dodge axle is a bi*ch and it's very common for the pitch or backspacing to be off...

 

i'm willing to bet that you got a u-joint out

 

What type posi?
A true "locker" will click/tick when it engages full lock then again when it come out.
Did it do this before the new rear end?
