Default Spare Key!

I just went down to the stealer and had an extra key made for my truck and it cost me $250! How ridiculous is that... I bought my 07 truck used and it only came with one key. I don't know if new ones come with two. Technology, What is this world coming to... They told me if I ever lost the one key I had that the truck would have to be towed to the dealer and then an extra key would be made, so I'd be out that cost as well. Just to be on the safe side, I thought I better get an extra.

Man, I'm glad I don't have a sentry key. Good ol' $2 key from Lowe's and an $18 fob from EBay. Well, be glad it wasn't a Mercedes. Those keys top $350.

They told you wrong! Yes you need a key from the dealer, yes it is a crazy amount of money. But you can get one made at any dealership with just the vin #. You would not have to be towed!
I bought an '02 Jeep Grand Cherokee last year, private deal, and the original owner lost one of the keys a few years ago (or so she said).
Called the dealer for a price on the second. They said like $235 if it was key & separate FOB or $285 for the newer key where it's all in one. I could either bring the vehicle in or give them the vin #. If I did not bring the vehicle in though, I would need to bring the registration and a picture ID, but this had nothing to do with making the key, this was there way of proving I was the owner and not planning to steal the thing...
I opted instead to pay $1.50 and have a key cut. It won't let me drive the thing, but it'll get me in the door if I ever lock the original key inside it...
