Default Magnaflow - just the muffler?

So I got to wondering - I dont need stainless steel, will I get all the other benefits of a Magnaflow system if I get an aftermarket replacement exhaust and have them fit the Magnaflow muffler only? (sound, improved flow). I figure I could save a lot of money if I do it this way

Thats basically what I did.

I didnt buy one of those $600 "cat-back" stainless steel exhaust systems. I just went to my local muffler shop, told them I wanted a Magnaflow SI/DO, gave them the part #, they ordered it and I brought my truck in. They took the stock stuff off, bent some pipe, welded it all in, and attached 2 chrome tips. I left after a $300 charge.

Sure you can, funny story time though..

I had a dodge stratus r/t back in the day and did the same thing just had a magnaflow muffler welded in place of the stock one. The cat convertor blew out 3 times in less than a year, dealer tried to blame it on the magnaflow muffler because he was ticked the repair was covered under mopar warranty.

Yup that's what I did too...they will cut out the 50 gallon barrel of a stock muffler and weld in the magnaflow along with about a footish of straight pipe. Remember that there's also resonators in the stock exhaust...1 or 2 depending on your truck. You'll have to decide if you want to keep them or ditch'em.

I did this also, except I did the work myself. the muffler I got fit directly in the stock location. I like the sound but the truck acts really stupid ever since I put it on. I'm assuming it doesn't have enough backpressure.

I know what you're talking about...the thing is your truck was always like that you just couldn't notice it. Dodge has it so corked up and muffled that you can't hear or feel anything. Having the stock cats on leaves more than enough backpressure...so that's not it.
