Exclamation Oil Consumption??

Hey guys, New to the site.... Very good site and tonnes of info!!

Now the problem....

I have a 2005 Ram, with the Hemi engine in it. Very well looked after, every 5000 km oil changed, never over, and i've always ran synthetic oil of the proper grade..... (not the break in period, bought the truck with 30 000km) Now I've just noticed that there is a little bit of oil consumption, over a period of time. To me a vehicle with only 75 000 km on it shouldnt be consuming any oil, its never been abused, i can count on 2 hands how many times its been over 4000 rpm's.... Other then this issue the truck runs and great, i've never had any other problem with it. I'm just worried i guess as this might be a sign for trouble ahead..... I'm looking for anyones input on this or anyone that has had a problem the same as this... I'm hoping this is just me being worried lol.

Anyways thanks a lot for the input!!

Hey thanks a lot HammerZ71, I read the post, lol but i'm still confused.... I'm a farm equipment mechanic, so i know my way around an engine and stuff, I realize that a vehicle will burn a small amount of oil over the period until the next oil change. Now I havnt measured how much per 1000 km on mine but I checked it before i went on a 550 km trip and when i got to my destination i checked it again and it appears to be down a little on the dipstick, when i return i'm going to check it again and see if it goes down again. I have about 1000 km on this oil change so far so to me It shouldnt be burning any, maybe a tiny amount but not that noticeable on the dipstick. That post had both sides of the story, some say that its normal for a bit of burnoff which I agree with, others say that its not normal..... I dunno, lol just confused and worried about it, and would like to have any issues solved now while under warranty

You probably won't get anywhere with the warranty until something lets go and it is obviously broken. If this is a recent observation then maybe something has changed in the engine. Broken ring, valve seals etc. Time will tell I hope it shows up before the warranty runs out. Good luck...

Unfornately whiteonrice is right on the money...you'll be hard pressed to find a dealer that will tear apart a good running engine because it's using oil.

I had oil consumption issues through the PCV in the past with my LS1...which a catch-can solved. The same thing could be happening with your hemi. Getting a catch can inline on the hemi's PCV system could be a problem though.

Okay guys thanks, just wondering if anyone had past experiences with this..... guess i'll just monitor this very closely and go from there... I can definately see a dealership not wanting to get into this though as of yet, I hope its nothing and me just worrying...... May be a stupid question but me running 5w 30 synthetic wouldnt cause it to burn off instead of using 5w 20??

okay guys.... just made the journey back home from my girlfriends place, total mileage was 550 km, I checked the oil before I left, was halfway on the A in the "safe" area on the dipstick, now i got home, parked the truck and let it sit for an hour and re-checked.... found that it is just a hair below the S in the safe area. Both times I checked the oil the truck was on level ground, and both times the truck was cold and had sat an hour or longer.... Does this seem like an excessive amount?? I havnt measured/topped up the oil in it but it is definately down after a 5 hour drive, and I wasnt driving it hard either, cruising around 1900 rpm the whole time.

Whats your guys opinions?? just leave it and drive it?? or???

Hi, don't know anything else to suggest. Unless you can see a leak or see blue smoke I can't think of anything. Worst case it costs you a couple of bucks every 500 to 1,000 miles.

Definately no leaks external, no drips on the driveway and nothing is wet underneath the truck. And no blue smoke that I can see at all, I'm just gonna monitor this very closely I guess and if it gets worse and any noises develop then I'll take it to the dealer

Just to ease your mind, my 04 burns a little oil too. It always has. I have no leaks and no smoke coming out of the tailpipe.
I just did a 1200 trip from VA to NY and when I returned it was about an 1/8 inch lower on the dipstick than when I left. I have 108,000 miles on it and have owned it since it was new.
Now, something to think about, (bear in mind I am no mechanic)
I recently pulled off my CAI to clean the throttle body. When I looked inside the tube, there was a small amount of oil in the intake tube that came from the breather hose.
I wonder if it is possible that some of the oil could be going there...
