Back in the day, I used to do oil changes myself. Maybe I should take your advice and start again. Full synthetic or other?

I got to disagree with you on a couple of points (what's the sense of having an open forum, if not to disagree on some things )

First of all, I don't believe you can arbitrarily assign an interval for oil changes. You are making a blanket statement for 3000 miles regardless of type of use. So you are saying someone who tows heavy loads, lives on the hot dry dusty dirt roads, leaves his truck idling while doing heavy loading in it and basically drives stop and go around the farm & town all day, everyday has the same oil wear and change requirements as the guy who hops on the interstate, goes fifteen miles to work and drives home at the end of the work day? Nope, sorry, I can't buy that.

Secondly, I have, and know many people who live in the north who run two different weight oils in summer & winter. My family did it for a dozen years in a J10 pickup which became my first truck when I turned 16. In all that truck went fourteen years and 255k miles without a single oil related problem, getting 20w-50 in summer and 10w-40 every winter. It would probably still be on the road today, twenty some years later if the damn body, bed, floorboards and ultimately frame didn't rust to nothing.

I run a thinner oil in my truck than the book calls for, at the suggestion of my local performance shop, a shop with a top reputation nationally, because of certain mods to the truck.

Now I don't profess to be an engine builder, but I've torn down and rebuilt a few in my day, and have rebuilt more than my share of tractor, ATV, outboard and single cylinder engines. I'm just an old redneck shade tree mechanic. But I'm more inclined to say the owners manual is a guidline, good old common sense should still play a part in what you use and the frequency you use it in your truck.

BTW: Wix filters for years without a single issue...

Not to argue, but....I am also a professional mechanic and have managed aircraft and automotive repair facilities since 1993. I run Mobil 1 5W-30 and either NAPA or Wix filters in my '05 Ram with a 4.7L and I change the oil every 7,500-8,000 miles. And I've done the same on three Fords and two Dodges since 1990. Well, that's a lie. When I was commuting 150 miles a day I used to change it at 10,000 miles. I've never had one iota of oil-related problems and when I dropped the oil pan in my '90 Ranger at 110,000 miles to change a leaking oil pan gasket, the bottom end looked like it did at 100 miles. Not one bit of sludge on the crank, the block or in the pan.

Tell me, why do you think going 4,500-5,000 miles or so with syn oil is going to cause problems?

IMO, changing any syn oil at 3,000 miles is a waste of money unless it takes you a whole year to go 3,000 miles.

People like that deserve to walk where the hell there going! Thing is, it's someone like that, who had they not finally had it done, would have had the engine go in another 10k miles and bi*ched about how **** poor a vehicle it was, blowing the engine at only 70,000 miles!!!

Agreed. Many people switch regularly with no ill effects.

Yea, I got into on here a few weeks back with a guy, claimed to big this big high paid mechanic about being able to go from synthetic back to conventional oil. He's telling people you'll do serious damage to your engine.
Challenged me to "prove" my statement, so I did, linked to a couple of sites, including the Mobil 1 site, saying you can, at any time, with no ill effects.
Then he tells me that Mobil is wrong...

i have also talked to the engineers at mobil 1 because thats all i run in my customers vehicles and he told me if you change to synthetic, dont go back to conventional. but as everyone is an individual, run what you want. as a professional, i would never let my oil go over 3,000 miles no matter what kind of environment or driving habit
