Default Oil Type and Frequency

What type of Oil are you guys typically running and how often do you change it? I've typically always used Mobile 1 syn in my other vehicles and changed very 6000 miles, after my first change this ok with the hemi?

hey mike. welcome to DF. Mobil1 every 6k sounds just fine. newer engines break in very fast, so it should be okay to switch at the first change. maybe give it 1 more change if you're concerned about it.

warning: you're going to get as many opinions and variations on this as you get responses, but 6k with Mobil1 seems fine.

I just switched to Amsoil, plan on every 12k

Where abouts are you in chicago?

There are as many opinions on this as there are days of the week. Personally, I'd get a couple of 3k changes under my belt with dino oil first. Even though a break in period is considerably shorter on modern engines, I'd still like to make sure I've got all shavings, fine particles, etc. out in 3k until the engine has 6k on it minimum. Some tout synthetics and longer intervals are OK, right away, some say wait till at least 10k. I'd say 6k is plenty.
I have traditionally been a Mobil 1 and either Mobil 1 or Wix filter user for years & years, and still changed it at 3k. Overkill? Probably, but I'm **** with my truck maintainence.
I recently took advantage of a buy 1, get 1 sale on Royal Purple and put it in my Jeep Grand Cherokee last October (engine and both diffs were due, used RP in the diffs as well). I found almost a solid 2 mpg gain in the Jeep within the first couple tanks of gas. This has continued right on throughout. I don't know if it's the diffs, engine oil or combination of both, but it was enough for me to try RP in my truck at the last oil change. I've not gotten enough miles on the truck since the change, maybe 300 miles on it in the last 2 months since I changed it. I rarely go anywhere as I'm a caregiver for both my parents for the last almost 2 years - so oil changes in the GC tend to be every six months and the truck about once a year.
To offset the added cost of the RP, I'm going to 6k change intervals and evaluate it. Looked fine in the Jeep at 3k and at 4k (it's been in about 4700 miles now).
But it looks like after almost 20 years of nothing but Mobil 1, I may be a switching to Royal Purple for good...

By the way, my ex-wife and her entire family (not a one who ever liked me in the 14 years we were together) is from just outside Chicago. As a result, I've decided I don't like either of you...

I've been running Mobil 1 0W-20 in mine with no problems, and a modest increase in highway fuel economy (1mpg to 1.5mpg, I'd say). I noticed the average fuel economy drop off after about 5500 miles or so, did an oil change & got it right back, so I'm planning to stick with the 0W-20 and 5000-6000 mile intervals.

I gotta say, I agree with Hammer about the break-in period. While it may be true that newer engines may not need the lengthy break-in that older engines needed, they still need SOME break in. Rings still need to be seated, sand will still extricate itself from the components of the engine that are sand-cast at the foundry, and small particles will still break off sharp edges like piston skirts and various valvetrain pieces.

I did the same as Hammer is saying & did two 3000 mile dead dino oil changes before switching.

ok, i have read a lot about oil change intervals and oil weight, I am a professional mechanic with many years under my belt, this is the best advice you can get-first off never go more than 3,000 miles on an oil change, i've seen too many ruined engines(even with synthetic oil) because they didnt change oil at 3,000 miles. second ecspecially with these dodge engines dont go to a diff. weight and viscosity, stay with what the manufacturer says, 5w20 for the hemi, and 5w30 for the 4.7. I'm not being a *****, I just dont want you guys to ruin your engines ( at some point) by changing to a diff. weight and viscosity or going over the 3,000 mile mark. one more thing with synthetic oil, once you go to syn. dont go back to conventional-if you do your asking for trouble. just some friendly advice. just keep showing ford and chevy what a real truck is all about.

I am probably going to get mine changed every 4,500 miles after the first change at 2,500. I was going to have the dealer do it, but do they have Mobile 1?

hey dude the 4.7 takes 5w20 just like the hemmi and It's kind of a dumb thing to say that if you go to synthetic never go back! Why would you even say that?? What could happen? What evedence do you have? This is why I hate all these oil threds, too much urban legend.

I have royal Purple in my truck, ive put about 5,500 miles on this oil change, checked it yesterday and it still looked like i just put it in there. so im gonna try and see if i can push it to 7-8k. Just my opinion. no need to change if its still good.
