Well my next oil change is coming up and I am thinking about beginning the switch to a fully synthetic system. I am going to start with the motor oil first... gears and tranny later. But for the motor oil I was looking at Amsoil and Royal Purple. I am leaning towards the Amsoil 0-30W with their filter because it's very low resistance, but leaves a fine coat on the cylinders which will be good for when it gets really cold around here. They say that it's good for 25K, but I was wondering if that is valid and if so I would still probably change my oil at 17.5-20k range. Any opinions or info would be helpful. Thanks

 

I went 100% Amsoil and am satisified. Is it better than Royal Purple or Mobil 1, I don't know and the opinions are as diverse as Coke vs Pepsi. One thing I do not subscribe to are these extended oil changes to save maybe $70 a year on a truck I have much time and money invested in. Any mods that increase performace put additional stress on the motor. Additionally, I value my warranty and know that Chrysler would love to deny a claim due to maintenance non-conformance. Every major synthetic oil retailer states that you should follow the manufacturer's recomended maintenace schedule.

I normally change mine between 5 and 6 thousand miles.

 

I've read a few independant oil analysis tests involving Royal Purple, Mobil 1, and Amsoil and all of them were good to 10K. I wouldn't trust any oil past that.

It's interesting to note that Amsoil's only motor oil that is API certified is the XL-7500 series. The other lines (including that 25K line) contain too much ZDDP to meet certification. ZDDP is a phosphorous compound that can damage Catalytic Converters over long periods of time.

I was a die hard Mobil 1 user for 7 years. NOTHING else went in my engine. I had a buddy talk me into trying Royal purple on this last oil change and my engine runs smoother and MUCH quieter. I still will only use WIX brand filters.

 

So which amsoil should I use? Should i use that 0W-30 or should I use one of their other products?

 

I am running the amsoil 0W-20 in my 07 since the first oil change and I would not go 25K. I will go to 10K tops. Got mine from here.

There is a lot of hype out there with regards to Synthetic Oils, but the facts are the only area Synthetic's excel over Convential oils is there "Thermal Breakdown" capabilities.

Convential Oil changed every 5,000 - 6,000 miles along with a filter change will give you the same engine life as a Synthetic Oil at half the price. And if you really want to protect the engine change the Oil Filter at every 2,500 - 3,000 miles (Or in between oil changes), and it only cost you an extra $5!!!

Now if were talking Air Cooled engines Synthetic ONLY, Tran's and Diff's same thing, only because of that extra Thermal Protection.

I think it would be best to just stay with my current Castrol 5W-30 oil with a K&N oil filter until I change the whole system to full synthetic.

 

I would not go 25k!! I use Mobil 1, and I change mine around 6k.

 

I run Mobil1 since it's the easiest and most convenient to get (from WM), and a K&N filter. I change my oil annually since the truck isn't a DD. We've had it for 15 months and only 8900 miles. I changed to Mobil 1 @ 3000 miles. My oil changes are usually in the 6k range.

I wouldn't go past 10k either. Even if the oil will make it longer, the filter may not. Especially since the hemi's hold a bit more oil.

 

i use royal purple and have been very happy with the gains. no matter what they say they oil can last, i wont be going pat 5k miles
