honestly, either stupidity, or bad design. there is obviously a robot somewhere in some plant on some automated line that is overtourqing, some idiot engineer somewhere, some guy in accounting/finance trying to save $.25 per truck, or all three.

his explanation for replacing the filter is actually a good one. the oil is not broken down at 1300 miles, so why change it? he's trying to get the junk out that is inherent with a new engine breaking in, and most all of that is in the filter. I'm going to have my oil tested to see if i can do 8-10 k oil changes, but will still be changing filters mid-oil change for that reason. I don't care how well oil stands up to breaking down or how many additives it has, the filter still has only so much filtering surface, and it will fill up. so replacing just the filter makes perfect sense to me...but he's still an ***.

I heard of a guy that never changes his oil. He just replaces the oil filter every thousand miles and then tops off his oil.

I can understand the OP's reason for replacing the filter so soon, as I've heard of debris from the casting and break-in process. I have to say, I'd replace the oil too, since that probably has crap in it too, and since you're already under the truck, why not?

I hope he takes all the money he's saving on oil and puts it away for the engine he'll need to buy eventually.

I disagree with what the guy is doing, but I thought about it, and it could work. Again, I'd never do it, but let's think about it this way.

Let's pick a nice round # to determine oci's at. Like 5k miles. So in 5k miles, a regular owner would replace the oil filter once, and drain and refill the oil.

Well, in 5k miles, this guy would never drain the oil, but change the oil filter 5 times and top off the oil 5 times. The filter holds a little under a quart, and when you screw off the old filter, a little bit of oil spills out, so let's say top off is 1 quart. Well, with a V8 that has a 6 quart capacity, in 5000 miles, I'd say he's better off, he's had 5 fresh filters on there, and 5 of the 6 quarts of oil in the pan have technically been replaced.

Again, I wouldn't do it, but food for thought.

I actually thought about the exact scenario you said. I agree with you. I understand the logic and why it could work, but I wouldn't do it in my motor.

This is why buying used is risky.... Follow the maintenance schedule. The manufacturer generally knows more about their product

Not that I condone such posts, I do, however, have to defend traceis3's post here. You see, he's asked a few questions, as any new owner would ask, and every post uspatriot has stuck a hot poker in his eye -- and, I must say very rudely. I only hope a moderator has taken appropriate action against such vulgar and disrespectful posts and, uspatriot has been banned because he offers no positive feedback to this forum.

Now back to your regularly scheduled forum topic...

heres's my 2 cents. the truck cost you a good bit of money anywhere from 18-50k depending on what you got. is it really that bad to pay 50 bux or in my case 80 for synthetic oil every 3k miles to protect that investment. maybe it is a bit more than needed and you could maybe go longer but why??
