Superchips 87 Octane vs Mileage XS?
I have an 06 Dodge Ram 1500 HEMI. It has a 3" body lift and is rolling on 35"x12.5x20s. I installed a Volant CAI the same day I used my flashpaq 3815 with the 87 Octane setting. I believe I saw about 1.5mpg increase in fuel economy(from about 13mpg to 14.5). FREAKIN AWESOME!!
I have noticed that Superchips put out an update for Mileage XS that works on my truck with the flashpaq 3815 and was wondering if I will see a better gain using the Mileage XS programming vs the 87 Octane programming? I'm going on a 1,000 mile round trip this weekend and that would be a perfect opportunity to test my gains. So...Mileage XS or stick with the 87 Octane since it has given me an increase already? I'm thinking that maybe I see a better mpg because the 87 Octane tune gave me a little more hp which in turn means the engine can work a little less to get me to the same speed. If that is the case, then maybe changing to the Mileage XS tuning will remove that power gain and change other parameters?
Anyone know what's the difference between the 87 Octane tune and the Mileage XS tune?

The 87 Octane tune is not really a fuel economy tune, it pretty much retards timing just a bit to allow the use of 87 octane fuel without the fear of detonation.
I, and most others I've corresponded with, have found that MPG gains with the performance setting and 93 Octane gas was actually more cost efficient than running the 87 octane tune and 87 octane fuel (and a lot more fun).
The Mileage XS program is specifically written to give better fuel mileage and use 87 octane fuel, so I would say at worst, it would be worth a try if MPG's is you primary concern.

Yeah, just going for mileage right now, especially on a long trip like this one. Just going from 13.0 up to 14.5 is a 9% increase in mpg. Don't know how much of it is the programmer, how much is the CAI and how much the combination of both.
So the performance tune offered a better mpg gain than the 87 octane tune?

Not trying to hi-jack this thread. But does the performace tune work well with 89 octane? I get a big discount at work for 89 octane only. Right now it $2.75 per gallon! Will the tuner effects be null with only 89 ocatane?

I'm not sure if anyone's got enough mileage on their trucks yet. The working version of the mileage XS update has only been out for 5 days. If you try it on your road trip let us know how your mileage turns out.
The Performance Tune advances the timing quite a bit. Recommended minimum octane is 91, I'd not go below that for fear of detonation. If you are gonna run 89, do it with the economy tune, you will still get HP & Torque benefits over stock and the tranny shifts will still be a lot firmer...
I have found several people say the the truck doesn't normally take 87 Octane but I read in the owners manual that it doesn't need anything higher than 87. I made sure I looked it up when I first got the truck because it had a HEMI and figured it would need a higher octane. Did I miss a memo saying it needed middle grade or higher?

Ok, found that it says you can use 87 or 89 octane. Page 356-357 of owner's manual:
"The 5.7L engine is designed to meet all emissions regulations and provide satisfactory fuel economy and performance when using high quality unleaded gasoline having an octane range of 87 to 89. The manufacturer recommends the use of 89 octane for optimum performance. The routine use of premium gasoline is not recommended. The use of premium gasoline will provide no benefit over high quality regular and mid-grade gasolines, and in some circumstances may result in poorer performance.
Light spark knock at low engine speeds is not harmful to your engine. However, continued heavy spark knock at high speeds can cause damage and immediate service is
required.
Poor quality gasoline can cause problems such as hard starting, stalling and hesitations. If you experience these symptoms, try another brand of “regular” gasoline before considering service for the vehicle."

Hi Hammerz71
So you say/think it would be bether to run performance setting and 93 Octane gas, than the Mileage XS program?
I ask cause in my country the lovest Octane is 94...
I think I have done something stupid when I loaded the Mileage XS program when I have to use 94 Oct.

Well I went on my trip and was very disappointed. Now I have to take in consideration that there was a fairly large amount of hills throughout my trip from Nashville, TN to New Orleans, LA AND that I was pulling a small trailer (U-haul style 6'x4').
Before the flashpaq tuner running stock I was getting around 340mile per tank (~13.5mpg) at various speeds
MileageXS w/empty trailer - 325miles = 12.7mpg @ ~75mph
91 Octane performance tune w/mty trailer - 200miles = 12.8mpg @ ~75mph
87 Octane tuning w/loaded trailer (about 500lbs) - 300miles = 11.8mpg @ ~73mph
I'm running with a Bestop soft camper top which sits as high as the top of the trailer so that should have helped with wind resistance on the trailer. I know the up and down of the hills played a part in it however I have taken this trip several times and could always make it to Meridian, MS before stopping for gas. Meridian was stretching my gas tank to the point of only having about 10-20 miles to go before running empty(fuel light on, overhead flashing 'low fuel') But I had to stop about 15mile before Meridian and I was VERY nervous about running out so that tells me I got less miles on that tank of gas with the same hills as every other time I've made the trip...and yes, I've made it with the same empty trailer.
I just thought the Flashpaq would get me 25-40 extra miles per tank (which is a 1-1.5mpg increase) and I ended up getting worse mileage. Very disappointing.
