My 08 4.7 has no engine noise either, no pinging etc.

But when my Jeep 4.0 was new before the motor was broke in, it would ping under load when i should have downshifted. But it went away, weather that was because I learned to drive it better or the motor broke in, i am not sure.

Should have run it hard the first few thousand miles. ***** footing doesn't break in an engine.

Go down the parts store or Wallyworld and buy some octane booster and fill up with premium grade gasoline 91oct or better if you can. That will even up the octane for what you have in there and see if that solves your problem.
Does, the new 4.7L have mds now like the hemi's? i hope not for all those owners. It sucks

man this 4.7 is a weird motor......its like driving a huge ricer b/c all the power is in the upper powerband

2X Ben D, same drive train, never a problem, always 87 octane, why spend more when the 87 does great?

i get about 15-16 mpg hand calculated in the city i rarely do highway do i can't really give an estimate on that. my guess is about 20mpg that's what the overhead says and so far my overhead is only off maybe 1 mpg in comparison to my hand calcs.

No i actually drive very conservative, but i wont lie its new and i'm getting on it every now and then, but really 2 or 3 times a tank. it not like i'm doing smoking doughnuts in the parking lot, for 20 minutes to warm it up.

*update*

After several tanks of gas from several different station and grades, I found that it only does it in 4th gear. 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6th all ok except fourth. Don't why but that more miles I put on the truck the tone of it changes. I now don't think its detonation, i thinks its the transmission that making all the noise above 2k RPM in 4th gear.
