looking to buy a ram
Well to straighten things out, i don't even own a trailer. haha I pull a gooseneck loaded to the gills with 4-wheelers about 12 times a year, but don't really have to. Like what was said earlier, diesel was cheaper when i bought it. paying for the diesel isn't the problem at all, i'm a union welder and plumber and live at home. I'm not hurting for money, i just like it so much i want to keep as much as i can!...lol.... When i bought the truck i was really into going fast, and it was easy to build hp out of a diesel. I traded an 04 Z71 that was lifted 6" with 35's that would run 13's all day in the 1/4...... Thank God for NITROUS.......hahaha
So anyways, the loss of power isn't a problem, i just want a v-8 that i can put some pipes on and get decent mileage. I'll probably end up going with a 2wd because i have 2 brand new Arctic Cats sitting in the garage just waiting to get the heck run out of them!

well the 4.7 would be a great choice with the 08 because of the bump in horsepower now at 310hp and 330lbs and gas would be ok but if it were to me i'd go with the cummins and i know diesel is more expensive but why know by the fuelmeister 2 which takes vegtable oil into diesel no mods for 50 cent a gallon of go compressed natural gas its in diesel power and the guy doing it had a duramax tuned some and was getting 38 mpg so u could keep the power and all that torque
You can see what I have in my signature....
4.7 automatic 5-speed. Getting about 18.5 mpg city mainly. It pulls our horse trailer pretty good, so I am pleased so far.
Big change from the 2500HD though. My Dad just did the same thing, except his was a gas 2500HD. He loves the Dodge for the mileage now, and does not have to haul that much anymore.

My only regret was not going with a 2500! If I could do it all over again I would get a 2500 for the solid front axle! If you are going to lift your truck then don't go with the IFS ram! Actually if I could do it all over again I would go with the Power Wagon! Already has everything! And you must tow something or you wouldn't have gone with a 3/4 ton in the first place! So I would go with something that has a Hemi!
Wish i didnt sink the money into a 1500 IFS... I would love to have a PowerWagon.
Per this thread, go with the Hemi, I have a Reg Cab Short Bed 4.7, had decent gas mileage before doing anything to it. Now lifted, with 35's and exhaust chopped straight off, i get about 9mpg. The newer Hemi engines have multi displacement where on the highway it cuts down to 4 cylinders and saves a decent amount of gas. Go with the Hemi.... trust me.
If you're trading in your truck, I'd totally trade you my Hemi. lol
Dude, that truck is freaking sexy. A diesel with the pipes coming out of it.
So what I really think you should do is rethink your decision. That Duramax is awesome. Either that or get a 2008 Megacab 3500 dually. Now those are the definition of sexy. I love how those things look.
But hope you like whatever you get.

+1
the new 4.7 is really a strong motor. Not a bad choice at all. But I would go with the Hemi. It really isn't much worse on mileage, and is better in some cases. You might lost a total of 1 mpg by getting it, and I only say that because the new 4.7 is better than the old one, or even that 1 mpg wouldn't be there.
If you are serious about lifting the suspension, then I think a 2500 is a much better option. Suspension lifting a 1500 is a pain as you more or less have to put in a whole front end subframe. But if you just want the looks and are okay with a body lift, than a 1500 is no problem, and a 1500 HEMI comes with MDS, so you save highway mileage, megacabs and 2500s don't have MDS.
I just hope you dont shoot yourself in the foot if you get a quad cab 4x4 4.7. It's gonan be such a drop in power and torque from what you got now you might not be able to live with yourself.
