looking to buy a ram
Hey guys, as the title states, i'm looking at a new ram. I'm really wanting a 2008 4.7 reg cab long bed with a 6-speed. or something very similar. I figured i'd ask you guys before anyone else. what's good and bad about the 4.7 and the 1500 platform? Right now i drive a Chevy 2500 HD with the duramax allison combo with lots of cool stuff. I bought it when diesel was a lot cheaper than gas and now am looking to lower my payments and fuel bill. lol What do you guys think? let it all out, i want to hear everything.
Also, I'm gonna lift whatever i get, so what lift would be the best choice as far as reliability and just being an all around good lift? ( I never off-road) well anymore. hahaha
It's not a 4x4 but the local Dodge dealer had some of the 2008 long bed work trucks with the 4.7s for $13,900 drive out, and I just picked up a new 08 4x4 QC for $20K drive out. So now is the time to deal
You are going from a diesel 2500 HD 3/4 ton truck to a regular 1/2 ton 4.7?
I mean, obviously you made the switch to the REAL truck (hating on bowties - long story)... but um, seems like quite a step down in size for you.
So you never needed the load rating/towing of the 2500HD? This is kind of like switching from a convertible to a family sedan. But hey I guess you know what you're doing.
Either way... the 4.7 is a strong engine... good on gas. Can't tell you about lift kits (someone will chime in I am sure).
The regular cab, long bed, with standard can be had cheap as a leftover (as others have said). It is also gonna be your best 1/2 option for fuel mileage (except if you drop to say a 4x2).
Go for it.

If you get one and want good mpg, don't get the Hemi. My grandpa is about the easiest driver on the Hemi you will ever see, and he gets about 15 driving around.
Someone I know has a 4x4 shortbed 4.7, and he gets around 20 on the highway. Someone else I know has the 5.9, and he only gets about 10-11 in the city. I get 10 in the city. Never taken it on the highway yet for a long trip.
I guess if it was me, id go Hemi, (which i did lol). 4.7 vs 5.7 lugging the same weight to me figures into better milage. My milage is now getting to 14 city and about 18 highway with 12K miles on her but i started to baby the throttle rather than the jackrabbits off the line.
You can see what I have in my signature....
4.7 automatic 5-speed. Getting about 18.5 mpg city mainly. It pulls our horse trailer pretty good, so I am pleased so far.
Big change from the 2500HD though. My Dad just did the same thing, except his was a gas 2500HD. He loves the Dodge for the mileage now, and does not have to haul that much anymore.

you should always go with a dodge , you will save the money by not using that chevy stuff will start breaking , and you will get stranded, and then some guy in a dodge will come pick you up and laugh because you have a chevy . lol jk , 4.7 is a strong motor , dont have one my cousin had one in his decota, and totalled racing some kid, it had some *****, my 5.9 is faster of corse
My only regret was not going with a 2500! If I could do it all over again I would get a 2500 for the solid front axle! If you are going to lift your truck then don't go with the IFS ram! Actually if I could do it all over again I would go with the Power Wagon! Already has everything! And you must tow something or you wouldn't have gone with a 3/4 ton in the first place! So I would go with something that has a Hemi!
