I have an 03 Ram 4x4 that has developed a whine in the rear diff, it is very noticeable. I change the fluid annually with the recommended oil. I do not have limited slip. Anyway, the truck only has 118000 km. The local garage here took the rear cover off and had a look, they said the pin in the diff has more play in it than would be expected but they are not sure if that is what is causing the noise.

I have read some of the posts where there is indication of some history with differential problems. Any ideas if this pin is the cause or is there something else that should be looked at? Are there any TSB's on this?

 

Is it just the noise or do you feel vibration as well?

 

The diffs that have issues on are trucks are the 9.25 limited slips. The limited slips have clips that secure the clutch pack and they tend to break. With the mileage maybe one of the carrier bearings is going **** up. You might want to see if you can find a shop that specializes in rear ends.

 

No vibration, just a very noticeable whining noise.

 

I have the same problem and was told I need a bearing kit.

 

i have a whining noise in mine when the wife is in the back. its very noticeable. i don't think a bearing will fix it. i'll probably need plugs (in my ears).

 

I just had the bearings replaced under warranty (2005 1500 4x4)... the whining is not nearly as loud, but it's still there. A friend works in a Dodge dealership said the only way to get rid of it is to replace the ring and pinion.
