Prep work is key. I had mine painted and its peeling off in sheets on the center bar, (results of shotty prep). A painter friend of mine said it can be done with proper scuffing on all surfaces to be painted and he strongly suggested a good primer/sealer.

Like semigod said, prep is the key. However, you have to remember that the grille is the part that's going to get the most pounding so even a great painting job might get chips from rocks etc. If you haven't done painting before, it might be worth it to check with a good local body shop. A good one would probably even be willing to use your materials if you pay for the labor. The chrome is probably harder to paint than a flat plastic grille, but if they sand it right, it should be fine.

just adding to what sos and semigod said, prep! love my paint matched grille and is holding up well, but that chrome is going to have to be sanded pretty good with some nice primer!

great thread...

i was looking to do this as well, but paint it flat black.

Sorry Traceis3... dont mean to thread jack... but being related...

Could the chrome bumpers be painted too? Paint is foreign language to me... has anyone ever done that?

I'm looking to go a flat/matte black with the grill and bumpers.

TooFastForLove: contact Parts/Service and save a few bucks. He sold me an argent black grille shelle, (work truck style), for 185 bucks shipped to my door. Thats gonna more or less give you the look you want.

Thanks for the heads up on that! Originally i was thinking about doing that, but my buddy said he would paint it for me for dirt cheap. 185 is not bad though. My painter buddy also said he could paint the chrome bumpers, but im somewhat weary about that. Because, at one point i was thinking about rhino lining the bumpers, and the guy at the shop there said that they could not rhino line over chrome because of the nickel in it or something. So im just thinking if the rhino wont hold, would paint? Wouldnt want to have it all flaking off after a month.

I just think flat black on black would look bad ***!

TooFastForLove: if your thinking about the grille shell from Parts/Service, wouldnt hurt to ask about argent bumpers, (work truck style). I plan to get em myself in time...just bought a new house so ill be waiting a bit but overall thats my intention. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and sorry for threadjacking.

its just that my friend said he would paint both bumpers and the grill for 100 bucks total... which is a great deal. Plus i have a few other projects in the works, it always comes down to MONEY... hahaha

:::END THREADJACKING:::
