Usually there are no symptoms except it goes bang!!
Either that or when you open the pumpkin, you find metal bits from the clutch pack retaining clips at the bottom.
I have replaced my stock lsd with a Detroit TruTrac and to date, after 2000 miles, the truck is smoother and I have no issues with my lsd whatsoever.
Hope this helps?
Al.

All I have heard is that the C-Clips they use are cheap as hell, and a ****ty design, so they break off and can get lodged in your gears, ruining them.

not only the lodging in gears, but i had this problem and the gears were fine, but they had to replace the whole rear axle assembly because the jagged edges from the clips ate thru the carriage and all. i had about 1/16 in metal left and then my rear end would have literally explded.

Yes, it's a two fold whammy!!!

If the metal "W" bits from the ends of the retaining clips don't screw up the gears, the sharp edges on the rest of the clips as they work out of their locating pocket will grind and cut away at your carrier/end caps.
The resultant metal shavings which destroys the bearing in the axel and especially the wearing away of the carrier material, eventually destroys the entire axel.

If your talking to me xfeejayx about why I didn't replace my 3:55's with the 4:56.......Expense.

Here in England EVERYTHING costs and arm and a leg!!
Total cost for a guy to install my DTT and that's with me removing the entire axel for him to work with and the new DTT was $1200.
I then refit the axel myself.
For a 4x4 like mine, It would cat me a fortune to replace the gears and also a nightmare to remove the front axel for my gear guy. That's the only way he can work on these things as he has a small workshop he runs from home and has nowhere to store the rest of the truck whilst undergoing these mods.
He's very knowledgeable about this stuff, that's why I used him.
He says the design is REAL crappy and it's his 5th LSD replacment and axel upgrade this year here in the UK.
Considering that there are not many Hemi's yet over here that's a lot!
Hope this helps?
Al.

Just a little off topic, (sorry) Would there be a big advantage to swapping out the rear and front differentials with a Detroit TruTrac or would it cause steering problems??

i just replaced my open diff with a auburn diff in my 04 . i didnt change the gears though. swaped over the speedo ring and the ring gear. it wasnt to hard. but after doing it i would recomend buying the correct tool of the adjustment. since i didnt use it and adjusted them with a screw driver. bought the part from moesperformce with a recomendation from the forums
