Default Sealing off the Camper Shell

1st post here! Great forum - I like the information in general but I searched and couldn't find information on how to seal off a camper shell.

4 weeks ago I purchased a used 2007 2500 Mega Cab Cummins after trading in my Excursion Powerstroke and I have not looked back other than the spacious interior. We go camping a lot and I have to get the two big dogs in the back. These guys need to be "airconditioned" and "communicated" with which makes it hard when I stuff them in a cage on the open truck bed....

...anyhow, today I purchased a used Leer Camper Shell and had it painted in my color. It looks really nice!

My Megacab has the sliding window but the Leer does have a fixed one. I am thinking that I could order a sliding one for the Leer but this is yet another $125.

I was thinking that I remove the window completely and attach some kind of a seel around the entire window. Not just a seal around the smal sliding portion like the "Truk Boots" I found online.

Is there any way I can seal this so I can take the Leer Window out?

Any thoughts or tips are much appreciated.

P.S. Getting rid of the dogs is unfortunately not an option.

Default Still looking....

As of yesterday I got a sliding window in the camper shell. It actually cost me $120. So I have now two sliding windows that open (slide) to the oposite direction. They are ALMOST the same size.

So I need to find a way to seal the space between the front cab and the "dog house".

The guy who sold the camper was telling me NOT to use the blow up ones as they rub on the truck cab.

He suggested to have one fabricated that has metal rings (act as a spring) that have fabric between them. I know what he means but its tough to explain.

So - yes - any other help is much appreciated!

you know, i think i saw a compression boot on the leer site one time. it is a big rubber thing that looks like it would work pretty good. couldnt find much info on it, but looks like you would be able to use the shell without a window in it with that boot. ill see if i cant find it again. i want to get one myself.

EDIT: just found this small blurb on the leer site: FRONT BOOT OPTION "Some cap owners prefer to do without the window in the front of the cap. For these truck owners, LEER offers "boots" that fill the space between the cap and the truck cab. The form and design of boots, as well as the availability, varies by region. LEER Dealers have different policies about the installation of caps with boots. Ask your LEER Dealer for details.

EDIT 2: scroll down to the bottom of this page, and you can see a small pic of what im talking about. http://www.scottstrailersales.com/leer.htm

go to www.leer.com find a local dealer and they can install the boot for you if you wish to remove the slider. OR any topper dealer, The warranty for the topper expires when the unit is sold to another person. The only thing you want to tell the people that install the boot is DO NOT CUT THE FIBERGLASS!!! Most boots wont seal 100% water tight unless they cut the fiberglass to ensure the boot spans out enough BUT by doing this reduces the value of the topper dramatically. If you ever decide to sell it most people want a picture or sliding window not an open hole. Make sure they use some sort of sealant to ensure the boot grasps the fiberglass and holds tight, and ask if they use a "DRIP RAIL" this is a piece of gasket very small and not noticeable that stick to your truck and overlaps the sponge "PRESSURE" boot to the cab. It is held on by 3M tape and can be removed with paint safe adhesive remover. The inflatable boots do VERY little damage if any. They can be removed when your not using it and most come with a patch kit if you manage to tear it.

Default Thanks Guys

I was told by various people in another forum and by the dealer that this rubber boot is rubbing on the Truck Cab and therefore rubs off the paint. No one really recommended this rubber boot because of that. Therefore I purchased the sliding window.

Since I got now the sliding window for the camper shell I was looking for something that would "bridge" the two window openings.

I am interested in this subject as well. I have been told the same thing about the rubber air boot about rubbing the paint so I choose not go that route as well.

I havent had anyone complain about the rubber inflatable boot rubbing paint off. I have been at my shop for 5 years now. The only thing I have seen is a customer left it on for 2 years without ever removing and cleaning between. Trash build up caused scratches, but that was an extream. IF you are worried about the paint there is something called "CAB SKIN" it is a thin clear plastic( by your rear fenders on new vehicles its the same stuff) it is applied just like graphics and can removed with ease. This way there is no possiblity of damage.
