Default Odometer question

I'm helping my buddy re-assemble his interior on his 04 ram. ( girlfriend went Carrie Underwood on him ). He needs a new speedo cluster and before he buys one off ebay, we need to know does the mileage get stored by the cluster or computer. I know the neon is in the cluster and the caravan is in the bcm but, we're lost here.

I should have said EX-girlfriend...lol Aparently Carrie failed to say it would cost her $1700.00 in court costs, 6 months in jail and 3 years probation. LMAO

in my 01 the mileage is stored in both the pcm and the cluster. i installed a cluster from ebay and the odometer displays the "new" mileage from the cluster, not the pcm. when you buy a new pcm or cluster from the dealer, they (somebody) is supposed to load the old mileage into the new component. i'll forever have a mismatch in mine, but i don't care.

i'd recommend your buddy know the mileage in the cluster he is buying, and try to get one with similar or less miles than the truck.

Yeah, the dealer will probably only charge you $60 or $70 to fix it since they chagre a minimum of an hour diagnostic tools fee. Not a bad price to get something like that done though. It's a hassle here in NY state to get your vehicle inspected with a mismatched odometer. You need to have a sticker inside the door molding specifying the real mileage and they have to write down the actual odometer mileage and figure out the difference, It also shows up on your Carfax report if they make a mistake and enter in the wrong mileage! It's a PIA
