4.56 Gears Top Speed

yea i want to know how you got to 160 without a speedo (a gps would show you i guess) and how could it get there being a brick wall of sorts. i was able to get to 150 in my 79 T/A but it tookseveral miles on a 4 lane highway at 4 in the morning with no traffic. but i had a 160 speedo and 2.41 gears!!! but only a 3 speed turbo 350 tranny.

my top rpm is 5800 and hopefully after the update from superchips it will reach 6000rpm. i am just asking because i am happy i finally got the speed limiter off after 4 years of driving with it. so when i decided to upgrade my gears i heard i am going to lose my top speed and that it will be only 100 mph or 160 kmh. so i just needed to be exactly sure of what will happen.

Are you more worried about how fast the truck will actually go or how fast you can get the truck up to its top speed????? Switching to a larger gear improves acceleration but will knock off a few mph off your top speed while a shorter gear will give you a higher top speed but your acceleration will be slower. Even if you go back and do the math, the math supports this, however just putting in the numbers you have posted up in previous posts you will be well over the 100mph mark with the 4.56 gears installed. But really what do you care about more... being able to hit the highest possible speed or getting up to your top speed the fastest?

weight isn't all that important when considering top speed. it adds to your rolling resistance (resistance from tire flex and bearings), but that's about it. its drag that kills top speed.
3rd gen ram has a drag coefficient of .467, pretty bad, but not as bad as hummers (.57 for h2)
a bunch of math says that to make 160, a 3rd gen ram will take 570 HP on a 2wd reg cab with the aerodynamics of an SRT-10, and 4.11 gears.
so justanothermoparman, what you got in that thing?
and now that i think about it, i bet a ram has a HIGHER top speed with a higher gear ratio. sure a (numerically) lower gear ratio lets you go faster with each RPM, but the ram isn't top speed limited by engine rpm, its likely limited by engine horsepwer and wheel torque. going to a numerically higher gear lets the engine make more horsepower at any given speed and gets more torque to the wheels.
i know everyone says you'll lose top end with a regear, but has anyone actually tried it?
