Default Overdrive Question

Sorry if this is a stupid question, and im sure it is, but i do not understand when to use overdrive or not. Is overdrive used to get more MPG?? I have heard from some people that you can get better mpg when shutting off the overdrive is this true??

You don't want to use OD if your doing any kind of serious towing. Turning OD off can get you better gas mileage if your around town going 55mph or less because you will maintain a steady rpms and won't kick in/out going up hills and going from 45-55 you'll be able to maintain a steady gear and not kick down. At 55 or higher you will benefit from OD regardless of hills...etc...

I just took a ride over to my sisters. O/D off at 55mph is about 2100rpms for me. Maybe 50mph should be the limit unless your going up and down hills.

good info thanks. My top speed around town is about 50 so I think from now on I will ride with overdrive off.

It is turned off when towing (use tow/haul mode is you have it) and when you are in traffic and you have to keep slowing down and speeding up. This reduces OD wear from the constant shifting.
