Use fishing line and a pinstripe eraser and you'll get it done 10x faster without having to use any elbow grease.
I've never put them back on, but I'd outline in crayon (that's how I marked the hood when I did my cab lights & the crayon wax will wipe or buff right off) and use the 3M Tape.

Yeah, just make a box around the outer edges, that way no possibility of crayon rubbing off on accident.
I would scrape the backside of the emblems with a razorblade, the kind you scrape your windshield with. I wouldn't use chemicals because they will eat away the plastic. Also, get a darker colored or clear 3m brand double sided tape. Don't use the yellow or tan or light grey as it will be very noticeable. They make theis clear stuff that is very thin. I used it and the badges were so close to the paint, you couldn't even see it. Most tape is failry bulky as far as thickness. I wouldn't use RTV sealant as it can be very messy and problematic.

Ohh, that video was friggin hilarious. That same guy made another video on how to install the top cab lights. Same hilarious comedic presentation

i takes alot of elbow grease. took a few hours to do the 2 doors and the tailgate. i used a heatgun. fishing line and a credit card. i didnt salvage my emblems i didnt care if i ruined mine.
after watching that video i wish i had the eraser wheel. that is where the time is spend getting the residue off.
