My silverado had a block heater. In the 3-1/2yrs I owned it, I never once used it. i live in upstate NY
this picture is from yesterday. check the temp!
I guess your truck don't see temp like this then:

cmcgraw: There are different types of engine heaters: cylinder rods, freeze plugs, and silicon pads. I believe '02 Rams have the freeze plug type, which is the most common. Look at the freeze plugs on both sides of the engine block . If your truck has a block heater, one of the freeze plugs should have a wire coming from it. Also, check the oil pan for a silicon pad that has a wire coming from it.

IMO....block heaters are awesome! We use them all winter in Alaska (gas or diesel). There's nothing like walking out to a warm heater when it's -20 degrees.
