Kick down problem when passing
Hi all. Wondering if anyone has experienced or knows problem associated with this symptom. When at highway speed and pressing the acccelerator all the way down the transmission shifts down one gear with no problem but when it shifts down the 2nd gear my RPMs go to 4000 and stop. The RPMS then fluctuate between 3800 and 4000 and the engine is racing but the transmission won't shift again. Any ideas?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Im not really sure what your saying. At highway speeds, you go to pass, the tranny downshifts, and then downshifts again? Maybe a rev-limiter between 3800-4000? What kind of motor is it?

Chris. Thanks for the reply. It's a Hemi in an 04 1500. The problem is only intermittent. The downshifting is normal, however, the fact that the car refuses to go above 4000 RPMS isn't. Usually when making a maneuver like this the RPMs go to around 5000 and then an upshift occurs. It almost seems as if the gas is cutting out at that point. Sorry if I'm not explaining clearly enough.

I am having the exact same problem. It has happened to me twice now on my 04' 1500 4x4 Hemi 14K miles. On the highway it down shifted to pass and when the rpm's reach about 4000 it just cut out and slows down, even though I kept my foot in it. The engine did not stall so I thought the tranny just missed a gear. I then noticed that the cruise control wouldn't work so I pulled over. From a stop I accelerated hard a few times and when the rpm's reached 4000 or so it kept feeling like a rev limiter/fuel shutoff was being activated. The engine's rpm's would just slowly decline until I backed out of the throttle and then it would drop back into gear and I could accelerate at a moderate speed. It was very weird.
I stopped for gas and after checking the fluids (OK), I tried it again after a restart and everything was fine (read this as it hauled a**)
I am a mature driver and I don't beat my truck, I have other toys for that. So now I'm screwed, what the hell do I say to the dealership when I stop in with my truck? ANYBODY WITH ANY IDEAS? My guess would be something electronic...how bout you?

Haven't they had a few problems with the throttle-by-wire system. I recall someone else having a problem with it, just not the same symptoms as you described. The only rev limiter should be at the redline and not at 4000rpm where it is in the power band. Let us know what the stealership tells you.
There is a rev limiter at 4k when in park. Maybe there's a glitch with the computer. It's possible a flash update could help, if your truck isn't up to date. I really don't see how that could happen, but its worth a shot maybe.
Stopped by the dealership, head of service said he definately felt it was a software issue...and I didn't get the feeling he was trying to appease me. It goes in Friday and I'll post again if this fixes the issue.
PS - Drove 200 miles since last problem and it has not re-occured

I had this problem. Now i dont. Let me tell you whats going on. The range sensor in your transmission is bad. Took many trips to the dealer to fix the problem. The range sensor tells the engine your in gear, when it malfunctions the engine rev. limiter kicks in early, just like in neutral, and the cruse wont work if its not in gear.
the dealer will put a new valve body in your trans. problem fixed!!!! mine has been fixed for a year.

Thanks for everybody's reply, The problem has not re-occurred after visiting the dealership. But they also "couldn't find anything wrong". They offered to wire the truck up with a "black box" for a few days to see if they could catch the malf when it happens...
But if it is the range sensor...will this show on the box?
Should I just go back and push for them to replace the range sensor ?
Or do you think they will just replace it without actually witnessing the problem?
Thanks
