"homemade" cai
Merry Christmas fellas!!! (ladies too)
I really hate to be repetitive, asking questions that have been asked a million times, but the search function is not my friend.
I got a k&n drop-in filter today, and I have a question or two about taking that a step further. I have read about some members using the stock airbox, removing the "hemi hat", and running a tube from the airbox to the tb. Well, here's where the retardedness sets in. Is the box over the tb in the 4.7 called the "hemi hat" also? If so, I should be able to this same thing, correct?
I was planning on hitting up advance auto tomorrow and seeing if they had something I could fab up, but I wanted to learn-up on what Im working with first (duh) If I could do this to my truck, would it even be worth it? I read that the "hemi hat" is very restrictive, so obviously that would help, but just wanted some assurance before I waste my time/money.
Sorry about my ignorance, but Im still learning all the mods/parts/terminologies of the dodge world
Thanks in advance..

When you say "that box", are you referring to the airbox, or the hemi hat? How, if any, benificial would it be to do what Im going for, as far as the stock airbox-tube-tb? Thanks again...
Hes stating the 4.7 hat. Your stock air filter box pulls a good amount of cold air as is, just replacing the 4.7 hat with a straight tube is good flow enough, since you are replacing the most restrictive part of the oem intake which is the 4.7 hat.
If you want a open filter intake you can get a couple more hp out of it by getting or making a intake that places a cone filter close to the headlamp as possible. But I prefer a close air box. I went with a home brew setup using abs piping that is 4" inner diameter. 4" intakes have been proven on the track to gain better track times, than the basic 3.25" intake. A home brew setup costs about $20-$30 in parts if you use the stock air filter box.

Yes the hemi hat is what I was referring to.....
As you can see, mine is made out of aluminum, which does not hold that much heat, but I imagine a plastic one would do better. Of course, one big piece would be ideal because of flow. The homemade ones using PVC probably restrict a little flow because they are not completely smooth.
Let's put it this way....I can run mine hard and still hang on to my intake after I stop. So the aluminum does not hold much heat. I bought mine on eBay for $40, and it came with a filter. I replaced that filter with a genuine K&N because I like K&N. It works good enough. They do sell some that have three pieces which will put the filter a little farther down in the front. The one I bought is actually intended to be used with the aforementioned hemi hat. But I just took that part off and made a few modifications to get it to work right. It pays to be creative.

Not really the 4" pvc intakes perform well over the aluminum 3.25" intakes or 3.5". This has been proven with airrams at the track when both his intake and 360 air intakez compared each intake by a few members a few years ago. 360 eventually went with 4" piping but sadly went out of business when they were bought for there powder coating business.
But it really depends what type of intake you want. Some are happy with homemade and some prefer aftermarket, but any intake will perform better than the stock regardless whether its a 3" or 4".

Well, thanks for all the info fellas. I am def gonna go with the stock airbox setup, since I already have the drop in (christmas present). I guess I'll see what materials I can find, then go from there.
What would I use as far as the couplers, attaching the tube/s to the tb and airbox? Any suggestions?

You can use the couplers that hardware stores sell for the abs piping. Thats what most are useing when they go with a home brew. I can send you a pic if you like, just pm me with your email address so I can do so. Im having a hard time uploading pics on here.

You can use PVC piping and have it look homemade or you can go on AIRAID and pick-up just the intake tube. You may find it on ebay for less. They run about $120 but they are clean and do exactly what you are looking for. I kept my stock filter box because it does the job fine and I worry about water.
Here's the combo but it has the filter in the package. Just make sure the tube will eliminate that throttle body hat and go directly to the throttle body
