Default what the hell is goin on? power steering?

okay about 7 days ago chicago had a bad ice storm and temperatures were freezing. i got outa work, turned on my truck and i noticed my steering was making a funny noise. i pulled out of the spot and sure enough there was red liquid on the ground. i drove home and i could tell it was power steering fluid b/c it was hard to steer. so i went to autozone and purchased lucas quick stop. all was dandy until three days later the fluid was on the ground and everyday since. anyone know how i could fix this on my own? or what could be causing this? it must be somethin serious seeing that the quick stop did not fix the leak. also i was wondering when i bring this into the dealership if it would be covered under the power train warranty or would this be part of the suspension?

Could be leaking PS lines, or could be blown seals on the rack. Lines might be fixable, blown rack seals not so much. Rack and pinion is covered under bumper-to-bumper; if you still have it, let the dealer fix it. If it's out of warranty, have a good non-dealer shop look at it and tell you what's going on.

Wow, again I log in to post about something, and there is already one just like I need right at the top of the page!

I've been noticing a PS leak lately, too. Small puddles of foamy pink stuff under my truck when it sits for a day or so. I checked the PS level and it's very low. Almost non-existent. I put in more fluid with leak-stop, so we'll see what happens. I'm still taking it to the dealer after the holidays for them to fix it, though.

Question: I've got a 3" body lift on the truck. Is there anything involved with the body lift that might have helped perpetuate this problem? Just trying to anticipate any problems the dealer may give me when I bring it it. Aside from the wheels, tires, and lift, everything else is stock that may have ANY bearing on this issue whatsoever.

Thanks!

Common, but I would not have put stop leak in it.

If you examine the bottom of the PS pump where the hose connects you will likely see your issue.

My 05 did it. I put on a extra clamp and it fixed it temp. I then took it to the dealer where they replaced the line. Maybe the new line is a new design? The clamp I put on it would have been fine.

I had the PS line replaced just before the 36,000 mile mark so it was covered by the warranty. About 2 months ago, at 54,000, I had to replace the PS Cooler. The bottom of the cooler had rusted through. At the dealer, I asked why it would rust out in just over four years. They stated that it was common in the northeast due to it being low and the amount of salt thrown on the roads. Cheap sh*t in my opinion.

Well, a lot of cars rust out like crazy up there. It kind of sucks. Is there any other big rust spots under your truck?

PS fluid is actually clear. But most PS pumps call for tranny fluid and if I recall so did the 1500 Ram.
