Default Headers

I'm thinking about putting headers on my 05 dodge hemi. has anyone ever done this, and what all do you need besides the headers to get started? Also, has anyone ever had any problems with their truck after putting headers on it? Is there anything else i have to change on the engine to do this, I'm slowly putting parts on my truck, and this is my next step i would like to take.

lots of people have done headers. just do a search for the word headers and you will pull up tons and tons of good info. if you arent in CA or a state with similar laws long tubes are the way to go. if you are in CA shorty headers are the only thing you can do and still remain smog legal. JBA makes a nice set of shorties, thats what im planning on getting. as far as the install goes. you can most likely bolt them up yourself, make sure you use a good gasket and torque the bolts the right way, or get the locking bolts. then take it into an exhaust shop and have them hook it up the rest of the way if there are any modifications that need to be made.

Thanks, i just didn't know if there was anything i needed to change on the engine to put the headers on.

hey, i was also needing a fog light lense for my stock fog lights, if anyone knows where i can get one, please let me know.

Hammer has pacesetters on his truck if I remember correctly. They're probably the best LT headers you can get for the hemi.

What? No way. Your pulling my leg right? They have always been known to me as Junksetter's or Poor mans headers. Don't get me wrong, they do the job intended for, but they are def not the best header out there. Mild steel thin 16ga wall tubing and thinner 1/4" flanges for the norm. on them with just a cheap black spray on coating.
While others are producing 14-16ga SS tubing that is Jet hot coated (or similar) with 3/8" flanges.
Also, the Primary tube length and fircone collector play a huge role in flow characteristics within a headers dimensions. You can put 2 diff make LT headers side by side and one will produce 10hp more than another because of it's design.

Now, maybe there aren't that many LT headers available for the Hemi application, but I did see a complete SS set-up that included the midpipe for $1300 on ebay that includes the Cats. Looked like a really nice set-up. Most of all it's all SS. You can send the parts out to JetHot or just buy from them and they will apply their specialty coatings specified per order. Best of all, they offer their cotings for the inside of the headers and outside. Anything you buy from any other source is simply a spray on for only the outside, so technically you could get away with a mild steel tubing and have JetHot coat it and it will last and have much better heat transfer than just the mild steel all by itself.

Yup, I've got Pacesetters. They dyno fairly well, about the middle of the pack, but cost about half as much as the next cheapest that dyno anywhere near that much gains.

Dynatechs have the best numbers I've seen posted - and the numbers I've seen are off the PC that records the dyno's at my local performance shop, NOT MANUFACTURERS' CLAIMS!

But at $350 for the Pacesetters and $1250 for the Dynetechs, I can live with the gains of the Pacesetters.

As far as the 'dogs claims about the cheap black paint, ALMOST EVERY header manufacturer makes their cheapest set in black painted mild steel. And yes, the black painted ones by anyone will not last!

My only real issue with mine are that the paper gasket that is supplied with them is cheazy (a $25 fix) and their Jet Hot Ceramic Coating is relatively cheap. I opted to purchase MY PACESETTERS IN UNCOATED STAINLESS STEEL and had a local chrome & coating shop coat them inside and out. I still had under $500 in them total and have a VERY thick ceramic coat on them that after about three years now, still looks like the day I put them on.
I think a chief reason the Pacetters have a bad rep in certain circles (although I've NEVER read a bad review on them) is besides the gasket, they are indeep very inexpensive, and as such, I believe are the most popular ones sold to the "do it yourselfer" who then tries to save even more money and incorrectly installs them himself.
Yeah, if money is NO OBJECT, there are probably a few brands out there a little better from the factory. But for the money, they are hard to beat and with a solid custom coat on them, from a qualified 3rd party shop, I'll stack their longevity up against any other brand of header...

I always throw out any gaskets supplied by header manufacturers. I get Percy's gaskets.

This is the primary reason they are poor mans as I stated because Pace setter doesn't offer a descent coating. If you do have them custom coated, that is the only way I would install them on my truck! Yes $500 or less for a custom dipped coating on any LT header is a bargain and worth a shot. No sense of spending $8-900 more for a few hp
