4x4 "grabbing" when turning slow

Default 4x4 "grabbing" when turning slow

Hello,

Possible dumb newbie question.

I have a 2006 Megacab 2500 cummins, this is my first winter with the truck and my first truck with 4x4. When I have the truck in 4x4 and I'm turning slowly in a fairly tight turn, like in a parling lot, the front wheels grab alot. As if they are both locked together with no differential.

Is this normal? This is when in 4x4 high on slippery surfaces, not when it's dry.

with sharp turns it will do that you dont really want to be making hard turns in 4x4

Yes it's normal. The tighter the turn on a drier surface will cause binding of the wheels. Anytime you feel that you can risk the chance of breaking something if you force it.
On snow or slippery roads you cannot feel anything because generally the inner most wheel is spinning on the slippery surface so there is no bind being felt.

yea, that just means you're getting a little bit of traction still. try not to do that.

Makes sense. Now if I could just eliminate some road noise from the drivers door I'd be in business!

Love the truck though, knock on wood, so far it's been great.

Do you have vent visors? Do they use 3m tape or tuck into the seal? Many complain about wind noise with the one's that tuck into the seal. It stretches the seal out and doesn't create a good seal against the window.
Also, there have been a few other complints about the door seals themselves not holding up. I would reccomend ordering a new seal from the dealer or see if you can get an aftermarket seal and replace it. Wind noise would drive me insane.

Yea, I got in on this one too late (I'm away with very limited access).
But I agree with them 100%, perfectly normal and evidence why you should never operate in 4wd while on a dry, smooth surface. You'll break stuff.
Also a reason NOT to get true lockers (you should opt for a LSD instead) on a truck that sees any significant road use.
Just couldn't resist adding my 2 cents...

Thanks Dirtydog - I don't have ventvisors but I did put a strip of thin tape like weatherstripping on the door itself, right where it makes contact with the factory weatherstripping on the truck. It made a big difference, not quite perfect yet though.

Thanks HammerZ71 - Would a stock 2500 come with lockers? I bought the truck used, but I'd assume that they'd have a limited slip stock. I'll be careful to not use the 4x4 when I'm in tight turns. Unless I'm stuck.

Nope, but odds are you'd have a LSD, although a 100% lock. I bought a brand new 1500 in '04 with the top end Laramie package, a 4x4, with no skid plates, tow hooks or LSD. I thought at the time it was crazy to build a 4x4 with none of the above. I made them throw in the skids and tow hooks, but knew at some time I'd do a lift & re-gear, opting for a lot better unit than the cheesy corporate LSD. Little did I know at the time that the stock units in the 1500 9.25" rear were time bombs, so I made a good call.

Lockers are an aftermarket add-on for any truck Dodge makes except for the Power Wagon, but they are selectable, so you have the option of an open diff for on-road use. User selectable lockers are the only type I'd recommend for a truck that is also a daily driver...

Not trying to change the subject but i have been feeling something similar when backing up and the wheel turned sharp one way or the other. Also i am not in 4WD just regular driving.....also it seems like it always does it when im leaving work or the truck is cold.....any suggestions
