oil change
going to do my trucks first oil change since i got it tomorrow....just wondering what kind of oil and filter you guys use...thinking of using mobil 1 or pennzoil platinun for oil...and pretty much the only options i have on filters are stp, bosch ,mobil 1, or fram....just wondering what anyone would reccomend based on their own experiance....i have always used pennzoil YB....but i am going to use synthetic in the truck
I have been using Mobil 1. Pennzoil is suppose to have a few more cleaners with Teflon I think?. Cleaners are what breaks down the oil and Teflon is what cause sludge build-up if not changed regularly. Funny how it can cause the same issue that it's suppose to clean they claim...lol I would choose Mobil 1 as they have been doing the whole Synthetic game much longer.
Oil filters. Stay away from Fram!
Mobil 1 filters are made by Bosch. However the Mobil 1 filters are formulated to work with Synthetic fluid. they have special filters and check valves in them.
I personally use Purolator PurOne. They are supposedly rated the best filter of any you have mentioned and have excellent Micronic filtration. I use Mobil 1 filters if Advance Auto is having their $24.88 sale for Mobil1 filter and 5qts any weight Mobil1 oil.

yeah i wasnt even really thinking of using a fram filter....i have heard that about the pennzoil, but i have also heard that it is all made us bs...so im not really sure...thats really all i have to pick from....well walmart sells valvoline synthetic but i have never heard of anyone using it...and havent heard much good about quaker state...and never really heard anything about castrol...know anything about any of them?....price doesnt really matter its just a few dollars difference between them all

I use Valvoline or Quaker state in my stratus.
Valvoline is the most common among Nascar supposedly. I dunno, not a Nascar fan.
Most imports like Honda and such have their warranty explicitly imply that you must use Quaker State only for full manufacturers engine warranty, however QuakerState warranties any engine that can prove you have soley used their product in your engine, that they will warranty your engine for I think it's 100kmi???
I have seen many tests that show Castrol losing viscosity very early in it's life while in the crankcase, although I did see a guy that had an 87 Iroc-Z that had 270kmi on it. Gotta be an isolated incedent...lol
Honestly, all-in-all, if you change your oil regularly and keep it maintained, you should have an engine that will last you a long time. Regardless of Dino or Synthetic oils.
I think many with Synthetic oils are harder and abuse their engines more. They think they can over-rev and change their oil every 5-8kmi regardless of actual conditions like towing or heavy abuse and then you should change much sooner regardless what the average change should be.
yeah...i plan on changing it every 5-6k with synthetic anyways...dont do any heavy towing, or anything to that nature...might go into the woods everynow and again...but just to hit my hunting spot or a pond to fish in so nothing really there either...basically just a daily driver...im sure regular oil would be fine bu just want to get a little more time in between by going to synthetic
I'm gonna suggest checking out your local Carquest (if you have one). Their synthetic is only about $.50 more than their conventional, and it's made by Ashland Oil Co. Plus, Carquest oil filters are made by WIX, which is what NASCAR runs. For the $$, I don't think you can buy a better oil filter. I think its $6 for the 5.7. The oil ran about $3.29/qt for the full synthetic.
You sound like me, I drive mostly highway, 20K miles/yr, and I change my oil every 5K miles. I just recently switched to the synthetic and I'm getting about 1MPG better than previously, plus the engine starts better.
Just my $.02.
Have a good one!

I have been using Royal Purple and Fram TG Tough Guard filters for years, its a combo that has worked well for me for the past 15 or so years. I change the oil every 15K and on my Dakota I was up to 210K miles and it had all the power it did as the day I bought it! Then I traded it for my current 2005 Ram now with 72K and fully expect to see 200K out her before the end of this year. I drive allot and do at least 250 miles a day back and forth to work and this combo has been working great for me! It is a buck more a quart but its worth it for the miles I drive.
Just my 2 Cents!

fram is the worst filter out there. that was one of the first things i learned when i took some auto classes freshmen year in college. i dont remember why, but they had cut it open and i just know the inside is some crappy paper filter.
