tire and rim question?
you are going to need spacers to fit a 12.5 inch wide tire with stock backspacing. also its going to be tough to fit 34.3 inch tall tires on a stock truck. with a 2-2.5 inch leveling kit and 1/4 wheel spacers you can fit those tires with no problems. the leveling kits are cheap and a very easy do it yourself install. you could probably get away without the leveling kit but it will be tight. check out topguncustomz.com i have their 2.5 inch leveling kti and it made a big big difference in the look of the truck. 35x12.5s are my next big purchase when i get rid of the 33x11.5 toyo AT's....
false ......i have 33x12.50 -20 's nitto mudgrapplers on stock rims no rub at all. then i decided to add a level then spacers for looks but never had a prob with the width of the tires on stock settings
the 12.5 wide tire will fit without spacers but take a look at the amount space between the upper a-arm and the tire. its probably 1/8th inch of space. i always just tell the guys to get the 1/4 spacers just to have more room for flex and full turn without rubbing. you can fit 33s no problem on a stock truck because thats what comes with the 20s stock.
i geuss i shouldnt have worded it saying they will not fit because they will fit just tightly. i know when ive been out offroad in tight situations there was almost no room between tire and a-arm i liek to have at least half an inch.
Don't spacers put additional stress on the lugs? I would think that the stresses go from a sheering force with the wheel mounted directly against the hub to a flexing force with a 1/4 inch play between the wheel and the hub. Would hate to break my lugs while doing some recreational 4-wheeling
Actually Nick and Ramhunter, you are not comparing apples to apples! On a torsion bar front end, you will NOT need the spacers with a 12.5" wide tire. On a coil over you will see a scrub at full turn, it's not 100% necessary to have the spacers, but to not have the scrub, you'll need them.
And YES Roelofk, generally the use of wheel spacers are discouraged, especially where heavier, more risistant over-size tires and rough use (ie: off-roading) is concerned. But it's becoming more and more common to see them...

goodpoint as always hammer. i didnt even look at the year of trucks we were discussing just going by mine (06) i dont see the problem with spacers at all as its onlt 1/4 inch. when tightened and torqued down they shouldnt put any more stress on the lugs at all. there isnt any play at all with the spacers they sit very tight up against rotor and the rim. doesnt even really seem to move at all. i took my rim/tire off after about 500 miles just to see what it look like and there wasnt even a scratching or rubbing mark on the spacers at all. thats just telling me its fine i geuss and tight. i am not worried about it. i would have rather gone the adapter route but i really dont need a 1.25 inch of clearance. im waiting till spring/summer to maybe grab some 35x12.5s just cannot decide which tire i like the most. i love the toyo mt and the MT baja atz. the DC fun country IIs are really growing on me the more i see them ( i know your bias towards those hammer)
and to be politically correct hammer we are comparing granny smith apples to red delicious apples. yes the 02-05 and 06+ are both dodge ram 1500 trucks they have a difference in suspension. just like the apples are both apples but have a different taste and color.
(haha i had to do that)
