So I know those 'chrome' covers come off of the steel wheels. Do they simply come off when you remove the lugs? Also, does anyone know if the black steel wheel is painted black underneath? I have seen a couple of others that had removed them and just had the chrome center cap on there and it actually looks kind of tough.

It is dark now and I have been pondering this, but I cannot go out and see, so I figured I would ask you all here.

I can always paint the steel wheels if necessary but it would be cool if they were already. Thanks.

I think the "chrome" is bonded on, it does not come off with the lug nuts. In fact the area covered by the center cap is not chrome, at least on the 2500s.

 

I think it is attached some way. I will still be using the center cap however. I want to paint the steel wheels black. I saw it on another truck and it looks good.

I have the same wheels and been wondering the same thing.....but i think Dog said in another post that its not worth trying to take them off plus that the paint would last better on the cover due to the temp. of the steel wheel after driving. I am wanting to do this after HEMIfirefighter did his 20's but he didnt have the clad covers. i am thinking of doing the wheel and leaving the cap like it is......i know i guy (helopilot) did his 20's and i think his where the chrome clad ones....and his turned out awesome....its just time consuming.....


Here was his process...
"I sanded down the rims with some 320 grit, then used Dupli-color filler/primer and applied two coats sanding in between with 800 grit. I then sprayed two coats of Dupli-color universal black gloss sanding with 1000 grit. I then sprayed one can per rim, about 6 coats of Dupli-color clearcoat for wheels. It is supposedly a clearcoat that will resist brake dust and chemicals better. I then finish sanded the clearcoat with 2000 grit, buffed everything out with rubbing compound and then used Meguiar's cleaner wax as the final coat and to polish it a little more. Hope that helps!! I have used Dupli-color products before and have had no problems with paint peeling or cracking. I think it is all in the prep and how good of a job you want to do."

 

That seems like a good process but what a PITA! Dang.....but I guess if you want it to last....

 

I saw a guy pull the covers off of wheels like yours before on another forum. I think it was a lot of work if memory serves, more work than he thought it was worth.

 

Maybe I just should scuff the covers.....then primer the sh^t out of them, then put multiple coats of paint. Hmmmm......when do I have a free weekend? I may end up doing two at a time. (one side) LOLOL
