I turned off the MDS and noticed an increase in mileage.

You are not the first one, the majority of people seem to be reporting an increase in mileage with the MDS off. Makes you wonder.

Dodge didnt spend millions of dollars designing the engine to run on 87 for you to put 91 or 93 octane in. the only thing i can see that a programmer can change about your engine is the timing of the spark and injection of fuel. That doesnt seem like enough to be able to run much higher octance gas, but then again from what i have heard it does increase performance.
Basic explanation is advancing the timing or running lean can cause detonation...detonation is bad. The higher the octane the greater the fuels resistance to burning and the less chance of detonation.

The hemi running on 87/89 has nothing to do with millions of dollars dodge spent...the hemi is only a 9.6 compression. High compression can also cause detonation...again detonation is bad . If you're a tech in training like you said, make sure you ask a lot of questions because you need to.

My point here is that dodge designed the (now that i know) hemi engine to run on 89 octance, because it performs best with that type of fuel. putting in a higher octance gas is a waste of money, but it will still work with a higher octance fuel (to a point). so you cant tell me im wrong because then the engineers from dodge are wrong also, that is with out the tuner, which like i said changes timing. so my original queston was how does a tuner allow you to use higher octance fuel and now i know.

Yeah, I'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but it is very apparent that you have wasted your money. Because you could not be any more wrong!
Dodge did NOT design the HEMI ENGINE to run on 89 octane, or any other octane fuel. They programmed the PCM to run that engine using data that OPTIMIZES that engines performance for 89 octane fuel.
If this is NOT what your college teachers are teaching you, then they got their "mechanics licenses" and "teaching licenses" in the "1970's".

I read in this thread that you are saying tuner can simply advance timing. You need to get back every dime you spent at that there fancy mechanicin' school. Because, either you came away with NOTHING LEARNED or they stole your money and taught you NOTHING!

Among other things Tuners adjust both fuel flow and ignition timing relative to the airflow of an engine, over the entire RPM range and at full throttle, in order to deliver the most possible horsepower. Engineers use computerized chassis dynos to develop optimized point-by-point, precise spark and air/fuel ratio curves for your vehicle’s engine and powertrain, producing more horsepower and torque without sacrificing reliability. Engineers take a responsible approach to performance by matching increases in engine power to the drivetrain’s capabilities.

I'm guessing, your "teachers" still define tuning as changing carburetor jets and adjust distributor curves.

And we have not even begun to talk about transmission tuning, line pressure stabilization, optimized shifting patterns, or any of the hundreds of other features offered in a tuner. Or the benefits of a custom tune over that!

But hell, I'm just an old, grumpy shade tree mechanic. What the hell do I know? I never went to one of them there fancy mechanicin' schools like you did...

now theres an explanation i could have used in the first place!

true dodge didnt design the engine to run on that but they designed the truck or what ever term you want to use to run on 89. my original statement was that dodge designed what ever you want to call it the truck or the engine to run on 89 why would you put in anything more expensive? and what does a tuner other then change timing of fuel and ignition do?

sorry about the ignorism i was on the wrong track
