programmer question
Dodge’s Multi-Displacement System (MDS) shuts down four cylinders under light engine loads to conserve fuel.
Oh and btw: our '04s ain't got it, it's an '06+ 1500 thing...

now theres an explanation i could have used in the first place!
true dodge didnt design the engine to run on that but they designed the truck or what ever term you want to use to run on 89. my original statement was that dodge designed what ever you want to call it the truck or the engine to run on 89 why would you put in anything more expensive? and what does a tuner other then change timing of fuel and ignition do?
sorry about the ignorism i was on the wrong track

now to your question (and bringing this thread back on track).
the ONLY reason to use higher octane fuel is to avoid detonation, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. some say that 'premium' fuel has more detergents than regular and stuff like that, but usually that's not the case, and even if it is, it's a side benefit and not worth the extra money.
so the only reason you would use a higher than recommended octane is if you either have detonation problems (it's hot and you're towing, you got carbon buildup...etc), or you did something to cause detonation. advancing timing can cause detonation, certain tweaking of A/F ratio can cause detonation. incidently, advancing timing also gives you more power. so advance timing, get more power, and band-aid the detonation with higher octane fuel.
the last two months have been great for dodge tuners and tuner updates. when the predator got released, it had a lot more options than the superchips. now superchips is countering with updates to add most of those options (if not all). the competition is really driving both to do everything they can:
you can adjust shift points, change transmission line pressure to make your shifts faster and firmer, disable mds, adjust tire size, gear size, max rpm before a shift at WOT...it just keeps going.
